Which muted tartan?

I'm thinking of getting and eight yard in Robertson Hunting Muted.

So far I've found two sources. I'm thinking that it's a slam dunk that I'll have it Made In The USA owing to all the odd complications involved in ordering from overseas. But...

One mill is Hedga (?) as listed on The Kilt Store's site:

The other is Strathmore:

Both are 13 oz. and that's perfect for me. The question is which one is more "muted"? It looks like the Strathmore is "greyer" and that appeals to me more. Don't have swatches and haven't heard very much about Hedga...any help from the experts?

Personally I like the Strathmore colours more and I've not heard of Hedga so I would o for the Strathmore.

"Hedga" is House of Edgar.
There is also Robertson Hunting Ancient, available from various mills - mine is from Locharron (where did I put those pictures?). Think slightly more faded than the House of Edgar's Muted.
For a more gray Hunting Robertson, you might want to consider the Hunting Robertson Weathered. It's only available from Locharron in 16 oz., though.

Another source for tartan is the Scottish Tartan Museum. Check the gift shop - the mill which wove each tartan will be listed. I forget how much I saved ordering from the Museum instead of the Kilt Store (it was about four books on CD plus shipping, though).

Hedga = House of Edgar....I feel like such a dope for not knowing that, thanks, Wompet. Why not HOE, Kiltstore?

The weathered is one of the "rare and even more expensive" range and I'm thinking that,despite the splendors of 16 oz., the 13 will probably be more serviceable for me. The Strathmore seems to be almost a compromise between the other ancients and the weathered and very nice in its low-key-edness.

I like the House of Edgar one. The Strathmore one looks more weathered than muted (the green looks brown).

Having both swatches here in front of me at the shop, the Strathmore one wins hands down (in my opinion). The Edgar swatch is very nice, but I like the "brownish look" of the Strathmore one.

To answer your question directly... Strathmore's is more "subdued" while HOE's is more "ancient" in this comparison (in my opinion).

Shoot. I saw Rocky had responded to this thread, and hoped maybe he had some Hunting Robertson in PV laying around (or in the works).

If you're gonna have it sewn up in the U.S. you don't gotta do all the footwork yourself. Kiltmakers have much more experience and access to fabric choices.

Just call up your kiltmaker of choice, tell him/her what you want, and they'll let you know the choices. Then decide.

Having said that, I do the same thing you do....then bug my kiltmaker and confuse her.

I have hand sewn kilts out of both House of Edgar and Strathmore woven cloth. You can focus on the look you want since both mills make top quality fabric. Nothing to worry about quality wise.

Being the proud owner of a Weathered Robertson which I dearly love, I'd go with the Strathmore since it looks more like mine. The ones that are simply lighter in color do not appeal to me personally, and I have come to love the "brownish" look of the weathered tartans.

But de gustibus non disputandum. Do want makes you happy.
