On to the North!
Moving it over to OT from the thread about the Wisconsin Tartan.
I had mentioned that I was long-range planning to get a wee small place up in either Wisconsin or Minnesota.

....trout are essential...ain't goin' nowhere that they don't got trout, hence wanting to be around those tributaries of the Mississippi.
And there should be room for the sheeps...my daughter is determined that we must have "ships". She has never gotten a good whiff of "ships" and their detritus...that's why she thinks it's a good idea. For me it would be a capital improvement as the older generation of my family from Nebraska and Kansas were heavily invested in swine...how I can still eat pork, I'll never know!
I'm also dead set on staying away from anywhere where the locals refer to Illinoisians as "G*d-d*mn Flatlanders". One of my Wisconsin-based painter friends from another forum (sorry...I've been cheating on you and participating on another forum) and I go back and forth about this. How come so many of the locals up there seem to think that they're some kind of latter day mountain men...it's WISCONSIN, fer heaven's sake!
But I do like both Minn and Wisc...had plenty of good times and know a lotta great people up there.
Best

Oh...and I looked up Minocqua....why don't I just keep going and try Canada?
Seriously, though, I have been to Phillips...a friend's parents used to live there.
How 'bout that Concrete Park?

That place gave me the major willies!

Because Minoqua (well, technically Lake Tomahawk) has snowshoe baseball. Yes, that's right. Baseball played with snowshoes. In the winter, you ask? Hell no! That would be faaaar too simple. And not as hilarious.
But really, Oneida County (or the O.C. as we like to call it) is unparalleled in beauty. It's a really gorgeous place.

I'm more familiar with the west central and northwestern parts of the state, which are fantastic (Hayward Lake area, Cable, Flambeau, etc.), but have ridden motorcycles across the northern section into the UP and agree that it truly is gorgeous...no matter HOW close to Canada it is!!

And why not? You might even be able to snag an island somewhere in Northern Ontario.
