    hose flashes

    Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to make hose flashes or garter ties.
    I need to expand my collection in these as I only have two pairs , one pair black and the other pair green, but my expanding kilt collection means these just don't cut it anymore.
    Many thanks for any help.

    Hose Flashes;
    Aside from the very good response given by Mr.MacMillian; let me add a bit here. Hose flashes were first used to hold up the stockings, in the days before elastic, spandex, et al. The Scots units in English service, circa 1780 wore red flashes. They were a lenght of red wool from an unservicable coat, cut to wrap Twice around the leg and tied in a square knot. The cut edge was treated with gum arabec to keep it from unravelling.
    So, for the 21st Centy, head to a Fabrick Shop(take a female along if your squimish) and look thru the cloth tapes, trims ect. Find a width of 2 inches or so, long enow to wrap twice about the leg, plus room to tie: you can fancy up the ends with a decorative cut. The tape should be a double knit, wool, or elastick and something(cotton, wool). Then you can make these all day long.
