Inchmahome Priory
On my recent trip to Scotland, a pal and I took a day to see some sights. One of our stops was at Inchmahome Priory, located on an island, in the middle of the Lake of Menteith.
The priory was founded in 1238 and there is written evidence that Robert the Bruce visited the island in 1305, 1308 and 1310. Also, in 1547, after the loss at the battle of Pinkie, Mary Queen of Scots was a brief resident of the Priory.

An effigy of Walter, first earl of the Stewart line who died about 1295, along with his countess, Mary. Their feet are resting on what appears to be two dogs, but the information board suggested it was a lion and a dog.

Another view, with the effigy of a 14th century knight in the background.

The magnificent east wall and the five lancets in the huge window

Even in ruins, this is a magnificent structure... a testament to the engineering skill and artistry of the builders. I'm humbled by their genius and tenacity. I would love to see a computer model showing the structure in its former glory. This is an excellent and enjoyable set of photos.
