    Opinions please!

I've been making sporrans as a hobby for a couple of months now. I originally intended to make the Rob Roy style sporrans on my old sewing machine, but it refused to budge. So I had to design a completely different style that I could do entirely by hand, and now it's kinda stuck.

The problem is, a couple of guys at work have said they really like them (and commissioned me to make them one!) but I don't know if they're just being polite cos they know how obsessed I am!

So I need opinions! I need to know if it's worth carrying on down this route or scrap this style and start over.

I'll try to post some pics here, hope it works.

I can't follow the links, I don't think they are normal HTML there, with the logged in user paths and such.

I visited your site and I really think you're on to something! Looks like you've found a fresh take on classic form. To be honest with you - they seem just a little rough around the edges but that will disappear as you refine your skills, materials and ideas. KEEP GOING - I love the color selection and overall designs! I mean really, a dark green leather day sporran? YUM!

I think you were logged into your accoutn, and that is the 'view' it gives for showing the structure of the directory, but if you go to the site they are on itself you should have the links you need.

Just checking - you do have the leather needles for the machine, the ones with a triangular tip to cut through the leather?

Most machines can manage a lot, as long as they have the right needles.

I think the colors are lovely and the basic design looks good. My one "eh" is the oversized lacing. Especially when it is in contrasting color -- jumps out at me, not in a good way. Looks a bit like those kits that kids make up into wallets and such (summer camp crafts). Aside from that personal observation, all else is good. Do you make/supply sporran belts to match?

    ta much!

Thanks to everyone who wrote a reply, especially since I couldn't even figure out how to upload the pics! I just created my website last night so I think my brain's a bit fried.

    To answer yours':

Thanks for the tips about the URL, I'll get it sussed one day.

Yes, I have leather needles, but I think the combination of the thickness of the leather and the fact that my mum's old Singer machine is ANCIENT and rusty, made for very dangerous sewing, needles pinging off everywhere! And to be honest, once I got into a way of doing it by hand, I liked it better.

I agree about the stitching! I don't mind it when it's black or a matching colour, but the contrasting ones DO make it look a bit childish. Especially on the patch pocket on the back. I was originally trying to make them a lot more rustic than they appear now, they seem to have become a wee bit too formal. I have done one in plain black with black rivets round the edge instead of the stitching, which I quite like, gonna do more of them.

Finally, I'd love to be able to do wholesale but I think I'd be running before I can walk! I work full time on a newpaper, and with 2 cheeky sons to look after, I don't get a lot of free time. (Ah, but my day off is usually spent elbow deep in leather, glue and rivets... *sigh*). But thanks for asking!

    LindyLoo x
