the dodgy swine flu
well two poor souls currently in the Monklands hospital just a mile from my home have this swine flu from Mexico it seems though from news reports that are responding well to treatment which is good news ...as far as I'm aware they are from falkirk
Ive had a few friends from various parts of the UK panicking thinking I'm going to catch it or something, its nice to see they care but i don't think its going to catch the way it has in Mexico but who know eh.
I for one aren't that worried about it being a epidemic here but has anyone else on the forum had folk they know panicking over it?

We were JUST talking about what we had planned as this is coming about. My pair of 5yoa daughters (really, granddaughters we legally have custody of) were preemies and have had pneumonia before we took them away from their mother (my wife's daughter). I am just coming off of a upper-respiratory irritation/infection and I have had a case of double-pneumonia a few years back.

Yeah, the media are doing their best to panic people as much as possible, but those two in Monklands are fine by all accounts. I bet a reporter creeps in and tops both of them so the media can report in as panicky a tone as possible "The UK has had it's first flu deaths. This disease is 100% lethal!" Pfaugh, and a plague on a' their houses.

Thankfully the young couple from Falkirk are stable and improving, lets hope that what is suggested that the virus is far weaker outside Mexico proves to be correct

On the early morning news here they were at the airport reporting on the planes landing from Mexico, talking to passengers who were just getting back.
Most were saying they weren't worried if they didn't start showing symptions in the next few days (dah!) to late to worry then! They are offering a clinic in the airport for passengers to be checked for the flu if they want-FREE-Not many were utilizing the service! Go figure!

It worries me a bit, because my immune system is somewhat compromised due to the cancer treatment I underwent in 1999. I have to get a flu shot every year, and, so far, I have not heard of one for this strain. I guess I'll just hunker down in mt rural home and try to stay away from people.

I pay scant attention to the pish that now passes for journalism in this country, but when I hear "influenza" and "pandemic" mentioned in the same sentence, I can't quite keep the specter of 1918 out of my mind entirely.

Yes, I am working in Texas in industrial construction, we work with guys who live on the border, and family crosses regularly. Because of this, our friends and family are concerned for our well being. We pay attention to the developing situation. The concerns are legitimate, but so far fatalities have only occured in Mexico, while the illness exists locally, but in Mexico has a larger concentration of cases. If the virus expands, it's possible to see some deaths, heaven forbid.

Wow, I really haven't been following all of it because I'm trying to finish up my junior year of college, but what exactly is going on with this "swine flu"? Is it a new strain of flu? And should I be worried about it?
