For as much time as we may spend fiddling with our kilts and accessories to make sure everything is "just so", kilted gentlemen know that we cannot truly compete with our partners. The goal of all this fussing is not to accomplish the impossible of looking 'better than'. The goal is to look 'appropriate standing next to'.
When passers-by compliment a man in his kilt, they are not actually complimenting the man in his kilt. They are making the nod to his partner:
