    Horse Hair

    I have looked...really I have!
Not all that long ago someone posted a source for horse hair at some hide and leather shop. I can't find it.
I want to start a white or light colored horse hair sporran and I need a supply. Real or synthetic would be fine as long as I could get enough to do a sporran without breaking the bank.
    Anybody got any good sources?
    Thanks!!

    Horse hair source

Not that I've ever been in the market for horse hair, mind you, but a quick Google search yielded the following:

    http://www.hairwork.com/horse_hair_for_sale.htm

    http://mmhorsehair.com/

    http://www.horsehair.ca/

    Hope this helps!

A word of warning- I bought a synthetic horsehair sporran and the nylon hair looks like fisherman's monofilament- well BLACK fisherman's monofilament. It has a good weight, but it has a slight curve to it. I may try the source above for the real thing and do a retrofit...

Thanks Shaun, and thanks for the warning. That's good to know.

I have tried those sources. They look a bit pricey to me. My problem is that I'm basically cheap
This is horse country and I wonder if I could get away with snitching some without getting kicked...

Someone had a source on here from some outfit that sold hides, etc, but also sold horse hair. I couldn't find it on the site search though.

It's worth calling around to some local stables and asking. I don't know of anyone who would be cutting that much length of hair off a horse at one time (usually the Dressage types keep their horses manes/tails neatly trimmed all the time), but someone might be able to help.

Real horsehair actually does look a lot like lightweight fishing line. As many years as I've spent combing out tangled horses' manes and tails, I've often made that comparison myself. All my horses have white/flaxen manes and tails, and the hair is almost translucent when held up to the light.

I don't know what the cost would be, but you might look around on the competition equestrian sites for horse tail extensions. A lot of riders put extensions on their horses' tails to make them look longer and fuller. I imagine they aren't cheap, but they would definitely give you enough for a sporran.

Noooo...that's not it. But..."faces, tails, claws, feathers, teeth, animal parts, porkypine hair (who knew!), dinosaur dung (kilt pin?), and fertility necklaces (not going there!)
    Wow! What's not to like!
    Thanks!

Ok. You don't have to call me crazy. I already know that I am. I have made sporrans about of about anything including old purses.

I've got in a mind a piper's type sporran. What do you think about this as a source of hair? It already comes mounted on a mesh backing. Trim to shape.

    JimB,

I believe you'd be better off getting a half pound of the shortest one in white from hairwork. That looks to come to about $30 and it's the real thing. I'd have to study- oit might be better to go with the longer one and double it...

If you DO choose the wig, we must see the finished product
