School student considering his first kilt.

Hello every one! I am currently a senior at my high school and want to try out wearing a kilt instead of these confining shorts, as well as turning a few heads at my school.
So for the last week I have been researching and looking at many threads on this website that have commented, reviewed, and compared every kind of kilt and kilt maker that I really care to know. But after the last week I have really narrowed it down to USA kilts and sport kilt. At first I considered utilikilts but liked the look of the USA and sport kilts and read some blogs and some other reviews on other websites saying that utilikilts are a “disgrace“ and “dishonor” to the kilts heritage so I decided to go against buying a utilikilt.
I would be wearing the kilt around my school and possibly wear it for my track team (I do not know if my coach would allow that but he’s pretty laid back so im sure he would). So the only thing that I am worried about are pockets, I was looking at USA kilts and I have not yet found any were that says they have pockets, but I have found that sports kilts, the works kilt, does have pockets. So after all that, I guess my question is, between USA kilts and sport kilts which would be better for, 1) casual wear around my school and other public places, 2)have pockets that I can keep my calculator and other school necessities in, 3) good to wear for sports, and 4) have belt loops.

Thank you so much in advance.

First, welcome aboard from western North Carolina, the greatest place on Earth!

Second, Utilikilts are not a disgrace, and that's coming from a traditionalist.

Last, it might be wise to check with the powers-that-be in your school about wearing a kilt. Some principals are kind of touchy about any variation from the dress code.

Whatever you decide, you'll get plenty of advice, opinions, and support here at XMTS!

I'd say whichever kilt you decide on you will also need a sporran it looks better with a kilt in my mind and helps it from being confused with a skirt. It also gives you a place to keep your stuff. I would suggest the USAKilt as I would think it would serve you in both capacities better than a sport kilt.

You can get a beginner sporran at Stillwater Kilts at a fairly good price.

first off welcome rubear, and i' am a senior at my highschool also and i have been wearing my kilts to school since early sophomore year, and i have gotten alot of positive reactions and i' am now known as kiltboy to everyone. the only thing you have to look out for is the other guys who will ridicule you at first...atleast until all the ladies notice you then they back off. A funny thing happened to me actually concerning this. A guy at my school ,who I have never gotten along with, told me i was "un-american" because i wore my kilt. Little did he know that my only kilts are USA kilts from Rocky&Kelly. So i promptly took off the kilt and shoved the tag in his face. Luckily i was wearing boxers that day.

So go for it i say it can inspire many good stories later on like this one

    from the Big Apple.

I would just point out that Sportkilts actually were designed to be used by athletes, though originally just as a replacement to a towel. Now, though, they make great kilts, especially for warm climates.

Don't consider me an expert, but I would personally go for a USA Kilt over a Sport Kilt, just from what I've heard from owners of each. To solve for the lack of pockets, either a sporran or some kind of satchel/pack will do you just fine.

I wouldn't discount the Utilikilts just because you've read that others label them a "disgrace" - remember, you're doing this because you don't care about "fitting in" and want to do something different and possibly "turn a few heads". I personally like Utilikilts because many people don't seem to realize they aren't shorts. You might think this detracts from the head-turning effect, but there are also enough people who do notice to make it worthwhile, and it means that it doesn't become a complete distraction (when I was in school, that was what the administration really cared about, whether your clothing would be distracting to other students or not). The only thing about the Utilikilts is if you really do plan to run with them, I suggest having it fall just above your knee, instead of on or just below your knee (as Utilikilts suggests), because the material can be harsh on your knee when you run, and since you're on track, I'm thinking you'll be doing plenty of running.

Welcome from Michigan Don't rule out Utilikilts, they are just a modern style of kilt. If you haven't been to their website, check out their mock-u-mercials, they are a riot!

I have kilts from all of them, and I'm not sure I'd want to wear my USA kilts for an athletic event. To me, it is a more formal garment than the Sportkilt.

    First off-

Second- Sport Kilts are, in my opinion, nothing but skirts labeled as kilts. I have one, and will never again waste money on another. I really don't like it- if you couldn't tell. It was not worth the money I put into it. I have a The Works kilt, by the way. On the other hand, I have 2 USAK kilts, and will continue to buy from USA Kilts. USA Kilts are excellent. They are much better quality than Sport Kilts. (I will say in defense of SK- their womens clothes are beautiful and I have bought three of their skirts for my wife. I will continue to do business with them because their accessories are also really good- I just happen to really dislike the product that they market as kilts!) On the topic of Utilikilts, screw the whole "disgrace" thing- form your own opinion! I don't have a Utilikilt because I think they're way too expensive, and there are much more cost effective alternatives. If you want a contemporary kilt, both Amerikilts and Flamingo Kilts are killer products at great prices. I have 2 of each. My wife gave me my second Flamingo for Christmas. So there you are- my own personal 2 cents worth.

And one more thing- on the subject of your principal/administrators- I have always gone by the philosophy that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
"Two things are infinite- the universe, and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein.

You may have just changed my mind on my second kilt!
