    Lilliard s tomb

This is a tomb on the a68 and the wee story that goes with it
At the battle of Ancrum moor 12feb 1534 the English army ravaged the Scottish borders leaving much of the area under English control. To further their own goals 750 Scottish reivers from Liddesdale and teviotdale joined forces with the English who numbered over 5000! It was Archibald Douglas,6th earl of Angus who had assembled a local Scottish force their numbers were nearly 1,200 When the fighting started and the english started to retreat the 750 reivers switched sides seeing this the english fled. A pursuit followed and their was much slaughter. when the local people saw this they joined in with whatever they could pick up .The story attached to the tomb is that their was a beautiful woman named lilliard who was at the battle with her lover. He was killed and she picked up his sword and started to fight until she was cut down this is what is on the tomb
    Fair Maiden Lilliard
    Lies under this stane
    Little was her stature
    But muckle was her fame
    Upon the English loons
    She laid monie thumps
An'whwn her legs were cuttit off
    She fought upon her stumps
