My first kilt pin

As much as I wanted one, I hadn't purchased any kilt pins yet. Mainly because the ones I liked, I didn't have the available cash flow at the time. After reading a couple of the posts recently from people making their own, I decided I definitely needed to have one for my daughters wedding in a couple of weeks; but it had to be special. Something to commemorate the day; not the standard, sword, thistle, etc.

Spent a good bit of time yesterday roaming up and down the aisles of the local craft shop (franchise that I won't mention the name) and finally found something that I think will work, and stay in the wedding theme. It's a concho that I used my dremel to remove the studs from the back, super glued a couple of magnets to and am using a flat washer (for now) as a fastener. Borrowed that idea from one I saw here because I like the idea of no pins through the fabric.

This is the finished product on the Black watch that I will be wearing to the wedding. Finished size is about 1 1/2" by 1 1/2". Not a lot of weight; but it's more for the bling.




I have lots of magnets, so I will be keeping my eye open for future additions.

I've been toying with this idea for a while now, but haven't pulled the trigger. One of the companies I used to work for had rare earth magnet backs for our name plates (which we only wore at the industry shows). It was quite nice, as nobody wants to stick a pin through a $$$$$$$ suit. It was only a bad thing when someone would forget they had their name plate on and put a security card or credit card into their chest pocket... :lol

There will be pix eventually. Thanks to the advice I received from another thread here, I am still shopping trying to find the right shirt for a casual outdoor June wedding in New Orleans.

I've been wearing the pin on one of my other kilts around the house yesterday and today and so far no signs of slipping or coming loose. These are 10 strength craft magnets that I all ready had available. I have a stack of dead hard drives that I'm going to strip the magnets from for future use. I think those will be much stronger.

OK. For anybody who wants to try this. I ditched the flat washer this morning. Decided I needed something that completely covered both magnets so it will lie flatter to the material. I can't violate the "modern weaponry" policy and tell you what I am using for the time being; but it was on my key chain. It's round, about the size of a Kennedy half dollar and has two short prongs on one edge. Completely covering the magnets made it more secure as well.

If ya could sneak an old butter knife from mama's drawer, you could cut the blade off and down to size....would lay flat and hold a shine. Just a thought and dont get caught!
