tacky?
I tried wearing a sporran the other day (first time) and didnt much care for it, seemed heavy to me. BTW i used hangers. I have a pouch the fits on my belt and is very comfortable. I have a hybrid x-kilt ,plain black canvas. Is this belt pouch considered tacky by those of you in the know? or do i just keep rowin my own boat and be dammed the waves??

On a black canvas kilt, it's probably just fine. FWIW, I really can't stand those hangers. Maybe you'd like your sporran better on a proper strap.

Aye to the sporran strap. Tried the hangers myself and gave up on them.

I don't think I could ever bear wearing a kilt sans sporran. I'd feel like I was naked.

Same here. Occasionally around the house I'll throw on my PV casual kilt with no sporran, but it just doesn't feel 'right'. And looking in the mirror, the proportions of the kilt are thrown off without a sporran.
I'm not sure I could go for sporran hangers either. I just can't get past the idea that the sporran would do too much flopping and banging on my dangly bits as I walk. The straps (i.e. sporran belt) seem to do a decent job of holding my sporran in place. Not only supporting the weight, but keeping it from flopping.
That said, I don't see anything "tacky" about a belt pouch. Hard to say, though, without a picture of the item in question!

I'd say it's all in what you're used to. If you started out wearing a kilt sans sporran, you probably won't be comfortable wearing one the first couple of times you try it. If you're concerned about it banging around your 'dangly bits', then you might need to adjust where it's hanging (could be a bit low), or adjust your stride to accommodate.
I use a strap/chain for my formal wear look and a hanger for my daywear look and don't have much problem with either.

Use a regular "britches belt" that's a couple of sizes to big for you to hold up the sporran. It's more comfortable than sporran strap. I've never tried the hangers, but they seem to me to do exactly what you don't want to happen.

From posts made on here by those familiar with the traditions of wearing a kilt, sounds like that's just how sporrans came to be. They were originally worn on the side, just like all other folks of the world carried theirs with their money and things.
I think that moving it to where it's worn now, though, also come from very practical reasons, given that it's a male garment, worn in the past by very young men.

I'm with Eagle, hangers most of the time but a strap for dressy occasions. As to the pouch, it is an older look but if it carries what you need and you like it, carry on.
