10000 miles by train

My wife and I just returned home from a month long, 10000 mile train journey from the San Francisco Bay Area up to Vancouver, then across Canada to Halifax, Nova Scotia--and back! GREAT trip!! I didn't run into many kilties, but I did see a few while touring the Halifax Citadel.

FYI, the piper, originally from Hong Kong, learned how to play the pipes on Skype! He came to Halifax and won a prestigious competition (can't remember which one offhand). Needless to say, he could really make the pipes go.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. I'm reading a book ("The Fort" by Bernard Cornwell) that features Highlanders from Nova Scotia. It's awesome to have a visual of that red coat and kilt!

Wow, that sounds absolutely incredible! I've always wanted at the very least to cross this wide country (Canada) by train, my parents have done it and raved about it.

Are they re-enactors?

Kinda yes and no. The Halifax Citadel is a National Historic Site and is staffed by Parks Canada employees in period dress. All soldiers in the regiment drill and do regular duty on and off season.

Today, the Citadel is operated by Parks Canada and is recognized as one of the most important historic sites in Canada. Restored to the mid-Victorian period with a living history program featuring the 78th Highland Regiment.

As a side note, Halifax has a by-law that prevents the building of any downtown buildings that are higher than 6 stories that give the Citadel an unparalleled view of Halifax Harbour and the Atlantic ocean approach.

Did you pass thru Bellingham (WA) on your way to Vancouver?

About a year or so ago, before the security company I worked for had to cut back, the B'ham Amtrak/Greyhound station was my main post (the "hobos" that passed thru called me the "Yard Dog".... in a respectful manner ).
