Tartans as pocket squares

Just picked up my daughters new kilt from alterations and picked up some tartan remnants. They were cut into very large triangles with finished edges. Most might see them as for bandanas or the like. I bought 6 (different tartans) andd will fold them up to use as pocket squares for my suits (instead of plain old white)

Not quite a kilt, but it keep the Scot in me evident when I am in corporate uniform.

Just a thought, it may be good to know a little about the clan, and tartan that you are wearing at any given time. Most basic clan information is available on the web. You may find it a good conversation piece (because someone will undoubtedly ask), and it may get you out of a bind should a clan member take issue with you sporting his tartan.

One for sure is a Royal Stewart. One for sure is a Wallace. The others I need to investigate.

Considerate non-member person wearing a clan or family's tartan, there should be no problem from any associated person, IMHO. Wearing one to blow one's nose in- now that is another question, even by implication. However since such use of pocket squares is so very rare in North America these days, not likely to come up as an issue here.

I do have some very nice tartan hankies made by Barbour in their company's tartan designs, purchased at the US outdoor company starting with the letter O that I lately seem to over-advertise on this site. That is a nice compromise but they were no bargain either. More along the lines of an extravagant impulse buy.

Not necessarily. It`s all in how you fold the square. I tried one out last night. I left quite a bit of material hanging out. IMO, it looked good with having it so pronounced.


As GQ magazine has said for 25+ years, anything goes if you have the confidence to carry it as if it were correct.
