Question Cross saltaire with lion crest?

This may not belong in heraldry; but, I have seen license plates for sale at games that have the white St. Andrew's cross on the blue background (The flag of Scotland) with the shield of the red rampant lion in the middle.

I have seen the flag of Nova Scotia which is a blue St. Andrew's Cross on a white background with the shield of the red rampant lion in the middle.

My question is this: Is the first merely a merchandising ploy or a legitimate flag?

It appears to me that the flag of Scotland with the lion rampant (from the royal flag of scotland) shield is a merchandising ploy.

Eagle beat me to it. Although the design you've described can be blazoned (azure a saltire argent on an escutcheon of pretense or within a double tressure flory counter flory a lion rampant gules), it probably can best be described as a logotype and should not be used as a flag to represent Scotland.

Yes, Chirs, that's it. I see that tag on a couple of vehicles around town, and I always salute it, since I assume Her Majesty is in the vehicle.

This is just a novelty (seen in the sellers name BSNovelties) just like the many Coats of Arms that are being sold on the net

Thanks Chris, that is it. I rather thought it fell into the category of not a flag, but not really anything particular either. I wouldn't put it in the same category as a "family crest", as those are not genuine at all, but rather in the category of an unofficial emblem. (I can think of many.

Thanks again for all the enlightment
