Not good Derek, even if it was and old kilt, it didn't derserve that. Hope you can find some use for it, in its retirement.

Ooooooh dear Derek! I think this demonstrates perfectly, why many Scots wear their one kilt on special occasions!

Indeed! I sincerely hope that Derek's damaged kilt was inexpensive and not an heirloom quality tank

That's why most spelunkers* I've met wear a heavy-duty coverall , helmet and strap-on knee pads.
Sorry to see the damage to your cilt Derek. I'm sure you'll find good uses for the remaining material. (Scarf, tie, flashes, etc.)
*Spelunkers are cave explorers that actually crawl around, not the 2-hour tourists that just walk through.

Wow, well traveled kilt there Derek, looks like lots of fun...
You must not have many muddy caves in your spelunking treks. The ones I've been in required coveralls, knee pads and gloves. When we were done we could pass for clay people.

I only wear this cilt to scramble around a few dry caves and climbing a few scree slope/ crags etc around waterfall country. Though, it has got grubby a few times but either it washes off or it had gone to dry cleaners. Mainly got caught up on sharp rocks etc. When cave water, pitches, squeezes and mud are involved I have a wet suit and sometime put a boiler suit over that and also helmet n miners lamp n spare headlights torches n batts etc etc. I have a good carbide lamp but havent used it for many years.
Last two caves we visited were The Little Neath River Cave and Bridge Cave. Both in the Brecon Beacons National Park. ... Less the cilt on both those occasions.
They worth checking out on the net. The Little Neath is very extensive system and starts with a tight crawl in entrance with flowing water, and you need to remove your helmet often as it gets that tight.
Nout like it though ...
