what to do...
so the other day while visiting many thrift stores looking for things for my new apartment i came across what was labeled as a ladies kilt. and indeed it was tartan/plaid material with two brown leather straps on the left hip. the tartan seemed to me to be royal Stewart perhaps. the waist was fairly small, i'm a 32 mens waist and this was smaller than I. although if it would've fit me or my girlfriend (we are both about 5'4) it would've been a great floor length kilted skirt/dress; for a short, thin lass.
my problem with it is that it does appear that it was altered, possibly had the waist taken in, or it was an attempt at making a kilted skirt. i say this because there was no other straps or buckles to hold the inner apron in place. also it did not have many pleats and the front apron seemed rather small. on the plus side it did seem to be wool.
so what im wondering is should i go and rescue it? and possibly make it into a sash or plaid of some sort and reuse the fabric and the two straps? or would any one hear be interested in it themselves? Im not of the Stewarts so the tartan doesnt necessarily appeal to me.
thoughts?

Re: what to do...
Being of MacLachlan descent, if I found anything in a thrift store in the MaclLachlan tartan I would snap it up.
It's almost impossible to find that tartan around.
But you can't swing a dead cat without hitting the Stewart tartan.
So unless you had a specific need or want for it, I'd let it hang for a Stewart to find.

If it doesn't have any special significance to you, I would pass it up. Save your money for your clan tartan or a color combination that you truly love.

On the other hand, thrift shops usually don't charge big prices for clothing, and you could take the garment apart, press the creases out of it, and use the fabric as a Christmas tree skirt or tablecloth.

all very good points. as it is right now i doubt it even wearable with out the inside strap, otherwise it would be very revealing while walking. although the xmas tree skirt idea is kinda tempting, because the price tag was very doable.

Well, an alternative perspective.
Although I am not a Stewart, many others are. And, in spite of the over commercialization of the Royal Stewart tartan, I am not sure I would want to take part in what could be interpreted as a disrespectful use of it.
Just a thought.

I think you answered your own question when you said the following:

If it were me and the tartan did not appeal to me I'd simply leave it for someone who it does appeal to. On a personal note, my mom is a Stewart and honestly there are a lot of them out there, why not leave it for one of them?
