attending a SAMS dinner
ok guys, would appreciate some advice. I will be going to a SAMS dinner soon. I will be wearing my green PC with my Stewart ancient hunting kilt (see my avatar). I usually wear my off-white hose when wearing my PC.
(I realize that last statement may get me banned from this site but it had to be said)
My other 2 choices would be lovat blue hose or my newest pair of hose (see pic)

I would like to wear these new hose but would that be too much green? What say ye?

That would be a lot of green but I think those awesome Argyle cuffs would make up for it. If you feel like it is too much, then go with lovat blue. Skip the off white hose, unless they are the really nice, thick, cable knit variety...

... and you are playing the pipes.
Seriously there are better choices than white hose and Sailortats has named two of them, either of which would be fine on the night.

I know, I know. Just trying to be inclusive
Sailortats, the traditional view is that white hose are only to be worn by those whose uniform requires it. They tend to be pushed by kilt rental companies and many retailers too, but there are so many better options.

Personally, I love dark green and there is no such thing as too much of it!
Go for it!
As for the white, I only wear those when I'm in my SAMS Post uniform. Not my choice but its a uniform so I'm not going to quibble over it.

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!! Earlier this year at one of the highland games, a local vendor was selling diced half hose (the kind you wear with spats) at $10 apiece. If I'd had a spare $150 laying about, I'd have bought 15 pairs and donated them to the post so everybody could wear them in parades and on colorguard!

To me, the style of patterned-top/solid-sock hose, like the Argyle top hose you pictured, look really nice for daywear. For whatever reason I am not all that fond of them for evening wear, so I would likely opt for the solid lovat blue in this case with your Prince Charlie jacket.
That's just my personal option. Either would probably work just fine.

Re: attending a SAMS dinner
I have had these hose for a few years now, and have never worn them with a Prince Charlie jacket. I tend to agree with Matt on this one, those hose, while nice, lend themselves more to a day wear outfit to my eye anyway. I would say the Lovat would be a better choice.

I agree with Matt and Glen on this one, go with the Lovat blue hose.
Best of luck,

With the exception of my avatar (which was taken about four years ago), I avoid white hose for solo piping gigs, unless I'm "jamming" with a pipe band that's wearing them. Thankfully, more and more bands are abandoning them.
