Mixing a Military horse hair sporran with a Utiliklt
To go with my new signature I "had to" order a Geoffrey SP 251, 2 pound 7 by 21 inch Horse Hair Military sporran - White with 2 long black tassels. Got to thinking that especially on the Utilikilt Mockers ( no side pockets ) it will cover up most of the narrow aprons and make it look almost traditional....
Thinking the long horsehair sporran maybe a bit of an issue at the urinal with a Utilikilt. I use hangers to my wide belts instead of chain, especially when the sporron gets heavy. No **** here so the chain turns chainsaw on the belt loops sliding it aside to do me business. A sporran belt would'nt be much better just slower. With the UKs belt loops trapping the hangers front and center, it hasn't been a problem - I flip the apron and sporran up. I don't normally wear sporrans with the UKs but it may change when Michael finishes my CC Rob Roy sporran. With this massive horse tail / hair pie up front it could get "interesting" trying to keep aprons lifted and horse tail pulled aside one handed.
Ideas welcome on the challenge I creat mixing modern with traditional and formal with casual. - LOL.
I keep this up and I WILL end up on "People Of Walmart" site.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Sounds a bit much to me.
Your kilt was made for lightness and ease. A horsehair sporran just ads madness but I understand where that can be fun too. Good luck

I wouldn't do it. No comment on the other issues. A hairy American buffalo sporran might work, though. I think Riverkilt has one.

Wear what you like and have fun with it.
However I think your reasoning isn't quite right about the effect of the horsehair sporran. I think that the fact is that a horsehair sporran is going to entirely cover the front apron will draw attention to the front of the UK and that the pleats start at the front instead of from the hip. I also suspect that the sporran length is going to be against you. Horsehair sporrans are really, really long. Because Utilikilts are worn much lower than a traditional kilt you are going to have that much less kilt length to sporran length. From my understanding the edge of horsehair sporran should not drop below the bottom of the kilt.
The biggest problem though that I see is that a horsehair sporran is really one of the most traditional/iconic bits of kit you can wear with a kilt. I have one and absolutely love it. But to make them work, especially the ones with the crome cantles and sporran tassle caps, you really need to "go big or go home". By that I mean they really require the full highland look (aryll/diced hose, etc...) to work even in a traditional outfit. Pairing them with a distinctly modern kilt is going to look incongruous.
That said, we learn by both study and experimentation. So give it a try and show us your results.
Cheers
Jamie

Re: Mixing a Military horse hair sporran with a Utiliklt
This is my third re-write. The first two were sarcastic and just a bit dismissive.
So, instead, I will say this - the Royal Regiment of Scotland wear their horsehair sporrans on a strap. Easy to slide on to the left hip when access is required. Leaves both hands free for whatever they are needed for.

Re: Mixing a Military horse hair sporran with a Utiliklt
Thanks all. Panache - I will try it UK and traditional. If the UK look works, I'll have to shorten it to 1/2 inch above the apron hems? Mine are 21.5 summer and 23 winter. And I am forced to wear traditionals at the hips, by a surgical patch above the hip level so I hope it will still work with both.
UPDATE: I tried to find the plainest cantle I could in my price range for this experiment. Thoughts of covering the tassle tops with black leather to "deflash" it more may be forthcoming. I will post pictures here of the experiment with all models of the Utilikilts. And let the rabble decide if I am gilding a pig or enhancing a look.

I can't remember seeing anyone wearing a long hair sporran with a Ukilt.. but why not try it?
Seems to me that the fact that Ukilts have pockets makes the wearing of a sporran unnecessary. Me, wearing traditional kilts, I NEED a roomy sporran to have a place to put all my stuff.
About urinals, the big hairy goat sporran I always wear is worn on a plain leather belt, and my kilts have no belt loops, so it's an easy matter to slide the sporran to the side.

Mixing traditional with modern and formal with casual is quite a challenge... one rife with potential pitfalls. To pull off a Utilikilt with a trad horsehair sporran? Maybe if it was part of a punk outfit complete with knee-high steel toes, a studded leather jacket, a mohawk, and a bad a$$ attitude to go with it all. Then no-one would dare say anything to ya!
I did a Google search for Utilikilts and sporrans. Nothing with horsehair but even a plain leather sporran didn't look good to me. The effect is very much like wearing a belt and suspenders: redundant. Add the juxtaposition of such a distinctive traditional item as a horsehair sporran against a modern kilt and I can't picture it looking good. In short, I wouldn't do it.
But maybe you have an outfit in mind that could pull it all together? If so, post some pics and let us see! Otherwise, use your Utilikilt's pockets to hold your stuff and save your horsehair for a black tie, traditional kilt outfit.

CMcG - will post with all styles of Utilikilts for peer review - I have my seatbelts installed on the recliner - it could be a trill ride.
I expect awesome to trainwreck feed back.
I am doing it here as we are aware of of the extreme formality of this piece and have some repect of tradition where as on the Utilikilt site they do not.

Interesting idea of mixin styles. I see no issue with it (personal opinion). To me a kilt et al is a clothing choice. Its handy that Im also a member of a clan (more choices). A few days ago there was a thread about mixin western style into a kilt. To me, thats no different.
My feelin is if you were to wear a full Black Watch outfit, with the matchin long hair sporran, you should be respectable of the Regiment. In the same way that when I get a USMC kilt pin (to honor my uncle), I would not disrepect him or the Corp. If you were to wear a "untitled" long hair, I feel you can do as you choose. You could cut the hair, add bangles or flashing lights, what ever.
As 1 who is toyin with the idea of getting a long hair, I would like to see your pix. I appluade you Sir.
