    Neckwear for Montrose doublet

    Hi all,

I managed to get a black Montrose doublet for my wedding, which I will be wearing with light blue dress Thomson tartan kilt and matching full clan tartan hose. Still looking for affordable buckle brogues.

Would have liked a dark blue Montrose doublet, but haven't come across one that's cheap enough.

Anyway, I'm wondering what neckwear to wear with the doublet. I have seen different jabots, but not sure I am keen on them. I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas, or if neckwear is necessary at all with this jacket? Any comments/ideas/suggestions welcome.

    Thanks.

Have a look at Lady Chrystel's website She is a French tailoress and Kilt-maker and her husband Robert is also a moderator here. She turns some lovely stuff.

The Montrose is normally worn with a white (cream, ivory etc.) lace jabot or a cravat which can be plain or trimmed with lace and generally worn outside the doublet (i.e. not tucked in). I have also seen the doublet worn open at the top with a black bow tie.

I think it would look peculiar, if you didn't wear neckwear.

If not a jabot, how about a stock? Can be got from most horse riding suppliers. Bow tie, stock or jabot should be worn with a winged collar shirt.

Or as is more usual, a tunic shirt

Stock might be an interesting idea. Would this be hanging out? The gap at the top of my montrose is about 1.5 inches. What about the collar of the shirt - I've seen pictures of really high collar shirts which could be interesting.

If I did end up going for a jabot though I think I'd stay away from lace though, a bit too "frilly" for my liking. Especially as I'm going to try and get a hold of buckle brogues, though that's proving harder than I thought!

    Real men wear lace jabots.

Are we talking about the same thing? I am thinking of an upright mandarin style collar. If so, Yes I agree. The thing is finding one. The cheapest I was quoted was £150 bespoke for one shirt. I can't justify that kind of outlay for something I would only wear once a year.

When I first wore a jabot, I enquired at Moss Bros at Cambridge and it was their recommendation that I passed on. I have asked my wife to modify one of my shirts, but her heart isn't in it, so I haven't pressed it.

    Regards

    Have a look at these:

I have a pair and for the money (even with postage) they can't be beat.

They are ALL leather, so can be a bit slippy on a carpet, so I glued on a rubber sole. Delivery was well within their stated timeframe. I think they are value for money.

Tunic shirt/neckband shirt...they go by several names. In any rate they do not have collars, which are detached and fastened by studs. Jabots have buttonholes and or loops to afix them to the shirt.
