Dead Man Saves Three Lives
One hundred years ago, my great-grandfather was one of only three people to survive the sinking of the Mayflower on Lake Kamaniskeg. Four men managed to lash hands together over a coffin the boat was carrying until they washed ashore upon an island. It was at this time that one of the four perished from hypothermia. The remaining three including my ancestor spent a dismal night, wet and frozen from the icy waters in the snowstorm with no fire to warm them until rescue came the next morning. They were the lucky ones. My family was in Barry's Bay this week to commemorate the event which claimed many lives in the community. That's my kilted brother Elliot on the far left with my father, aunt and cousin also in attendance.
