5 Yard Wool Kilt
Hello all,
Getting ready to order new supplies. On the menu are a new kilt or two and a tweed jacket and waistcoat. This is for a planned trip to the Kentucky Derby. Tried this a few years ago but reality reared its ugly head. Don't you hate that...
One of what I am considering is one of Rocky's 5 yards in either a Weathered Gordon or a Dress Gordon. The first question is for the rabble. How would you rate the five yard? I know Rocky's work is top notch. What I'm asking is is it dressy and how dressy would you call it? Would it be right for the Derby? Black tie?
The second question is for Rocky. On the measurements do I need to displace the measurements for an athletic rear? I've ran into issues before where there cut caused it to hang wrong since my rear lifted it up in the back and the belly pulled it in the font making the kilt basically hang diagonally.
Thanks all,
Jim

I'll let the others comment on our 5 Yarders (though I think they're some of the best on the market for attention to detail in our price point) as my opinion is obviously biased.
If your belly sticks well out in the front and your rear end sticks out the opposite direction, have someone take a picture of you (profile view). Cross your arms on your chest so we can see your belly and your rear. That'll give us a better idea.

Unless you are concerned about being inspected by the kilt police, I see no problem with wearing a good 5 yard kilt.

Like I said your work is top notch! Not every kilt is made for every event. I wouldn't wear a casual kilt to the Navy Ball but by the same I would have never destroy a hand sewn on a Mudder Run.
I will take a pic tonight or tomorrow and email it over with measurements that I take. If there needs any adjustments I will make them and send them via the site so I can get it in the system for future orders.

You've seen one, Drac! Bob's Leatherneck was worn casually that day but looks just as well with a nice jacket.

I wore one of Rocky's 5 Yards to my wedding and it looks great. Here's a picture of us from the wedding.

Jim,
I am by no means an authoritative source, but had I a jacket and waist coat to go with the 5 yard kilt that I purchased from Rocky I would consider myself well outfitted for such events.
Great, now I have to go add to my Christmas wish list.

Yes, go for it! I have four of Rocky's 5-yard wool kilts and would not hesitate to wear them to a formal gig.

I'm far from an authority, but other than the number or depth of pleats, most people (other than the aforementioned kilt police) would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between Rocky's 5-yarder and an 8-yard tank.
Sure it's machine rather than hand stitched, but you have to get up very close and personal before you will ever notice that. Most of the other differences between the 5-yarder and a true premium kilt are on the inside, and a lot of it has to do with the extra steps necessary to handle those extra yards of fabric in the tank so it will hang right and not pull itself apart over time. The fabric itself will be the same whether it's the 5-yarder or the high-priced spread.
I've got two Lochcarron wool 5-yard kilts from Rocky—Highland Granite and Poacher tweed. Both look rich enough to me for any event—even a date with the horses.
