When a frenchie feels lonely...
... he just finds some foreign friends.
Hi everyone,
As you could guess with such a title, I'm french, my name is Patrick, I'm 23, and I've ordered my first kilt a few days ago from SWK.
First of all, I'll apologize now for any mistake I could (and will) do on this forum, as english is not my primary language, but I'll do my best to avoid getting chased through the highlands because of this...
I've been wearing men's skirts from time to time for a few years now, enjoying the feel of freedom they give when walking.
I've always wanted a kilt, but as I had no connection with any scottish or irish family, and I wasn't really fond of "general" tartans, I had never thought I would really get one...
But two things changed:
- I discovered that we could create and register our own tartan, leading me slowly to think about getting my own.
- I discovered xmarksthescots, where I found a gigantic mine of information on this subject, and even found SWK, leading me to order one... (I had some luck there, as the "heavyweight" ones were exactly to my measurements, as a custom kilt would have been )
As I'm passing more time here everyday, I thought it would be nice to create an account, to thank you all for your help so far, and maybe have some interesting conversation here !

Hi Patrick and welcome from Southampton just the other side of the channel. We have quite a few members from the continent on here including several from France.
Have you checked out French tartans there are several that might suit your requirements without going for a custom weave.

Hi Grizzly,
Thank you for this information, but I have been looking at French tartans for a long time (especially the ones from Britany), but I truely believe going for a custom one would suit me far better, I don't really imagine myself wearing something I cannot identify with. As part of my family has no roots (small children left in orphanage), it gets even harder to find something representative of my ancestors, so I'd prefer getting one corresponding to what and who I am, even if this means extra-cost when getting it woven.
I don't know if I'm really clear when I'm typing this message, so don't hesitate to correct me if I'm making mistakes (or let me know if it doesn't mean anything )

Patrick you make perfect sense and I think what you propose to do is an excellent idea. There are some excellent sites which have design tools to create your own distinct and individual tartan. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thank you Chas and McClef, nice to meet you.
I'm willing to take a tour in the UK next year, but I must admit Welsh city names give me nightmares... I imagine calling an ambulance: "Help, i'm hurt, I'm in Ynysys... Ynyby... Ynysybywl..." (Ynysybwl et Coed y Cwm)
