    Douglas Repro Ramble

After a stroll on our local ski hill, and having just come down the mountain, I coerced my son into taking some pictures. Attached (to me) is a 6-yard Douglas Reproduction sewn by Matt at New House Highland. You can't tell from the picture, but it is made from Dalgliesh hard tartan. I really like the more rustic look and feel.

Note also that brand new Coyote Sporran from Rocky at USA Kilts. The sun is bright at 9200 feet, thus the sunglasses. Now, sans sunglasses.

While into the sun I'm squinting,
the Douglas kilt pin is glinting.

The obligatory pleat shot sans jacket. Matt does great work.

Note below my official Scottish Carhartt shirt. I know it is genuinely Scottish, because the clerk told me I was going to Lovat Blue. You can't tell from the picture, but the garters (recently bought via an XMTS/NHH sale) match the Carhartt emblem on my shirt. I just can't get away from matchy matchy.

The tam is from What Price Glory. Folks are always asking me if I served in north Africa during WW-II.

My hose appear, and actually are, too long for two reasons - one, they are those HofC Shetland Highfell Marl talked about in another thread - wonderful hose. They are a bit longer than other HofC hose. But, the main reason they appear too long is that the kilt has slipped an inch or so from the walk. They were also a bit warm for a sunny summer day, even on a ski hill.

Finally, is a shot of part of the ski area. A beer fest is underway. Each pavilion holds the kegs and taps of a local mini-brewery. I got lots of compliments on my kilt and met two other guys who were kilted, both in Utilikilts.

Incidentally, the mountains in the far background under the white clouds are over 13,000 feet, and have the highest lifted ski runs in the U.S. - over 12,000 feet - at the Santa Fe ski area.

    Slainte!

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

That is a fantastic tartan! Love the pleating to the stripe as well.

I LOVE that version of the Douglas tartan. I haven't seen that one before. Really gorgeous. And nice pics too.

I'm trying to find that tartan, so I can store it for myself for later (did I mention, I love it? ). Is this it? Yours looks so much prettier than this swatch. http://www.dcdalgliesh.co.uk/tartan_found.rpy?id=263837

Piperchick: First, thank you for the compliment. All the credit goes to the Dalgliesh weavers, providers of "hard tartan", and to Matt Newsome, owner of New House Highland (NHH), who turns the cloth into heirloom kilts.

You can read about hard tartan on the web page ...

    http://www.newhousehighland.com/heirloom_about.html

As you can see, hard tartan is just one option you may select when ordering a kilt from NHH. And, I believe you can order pretty much any tartan in the "hard tartan" finish, if you so desire.

Feel free to contact Matt at, (surprise!)

    matt@newhousehighland.com

I know he will be happy to answer any questions you may have about hard tartan or kilts in general.

Good luck on finding the tartan that is just right for you. I, of course, heartily recommend the Douglas, but since we are a family of Clan Douglas, I am a bit biased.

Mookien, that's very helpful. Thanks for the education, and the contact info. I'll be filing this away for future reference. I take it you were able to choose the colors that I see here yourself? If so, I like your taste. I'm also a Douglas (with 2 s's), and have seen this tartan done quite a few different ways, but yours is a standout for sure.
