"Jocking" a cap
I've encountered this term several times on this forum, and pardon my ignorance, but what is it? I get the impression it has to do with getting a balmoral cap wet, putting it on one's head, shaping it to one's liking, and then letting it dry. My problem is that every balmoral cap for sale which I've seen is already shaped. Or, at least, to my newbie mind it seems that way. As a side question, if the above is correct, what happens when one is caught in a rain storm? Does the cap lose it's shape and have to be 'jocked' again? A big thanks to any who help to reduce my ignorance.

Nope, balmoral off the shelf is not really shaped at all. Kind of like flopping a pancake on your head. You are correct ... soak, shape, wear til it's dry. In my military days, you also ripped the lining out, so that you could properly flatten it down, but I suspect that is too much for most folks here.

Here are a couple of short videos that I made of my "jocking" my newest balmoral. Since I don't have a stream, I used what I had...a bathroom sink.
Here is the before and after photos......
Before...looks like I'm smuggling muffins.

After...much more respectable....

The thing about "jocking" is the natural agitation of the burn. While soaking in the sink is a good way to shape the bonnet, its the action of the burn that really makes for an awesome bonnet.
I propose we all send our bonnets to Jock Scot for a proper dunking in his personal burn! What say ye Jock?

I'd have to send it to Jock...unfortunately there are streams within any reasonable distance from me...and the one that is...well let's just say I live in a large city and the water is...uh....brown. I'm not putting a bonnet within a mile of that water..lol

Having paddled 340 miles down the Missouri this year, I would feel confident saying that the Big Muddy is more like a stream at the moment than a river...
That being said I would have to concur with avoiding putting anything in it that you didnt have to...

Head out to Rockwoods Reservation or Babler State Park in West County. Both have clean streams and they are beautiful places to be outdoors during the fall, especially Rockwoods. Spectacular foliage too, when the trees begin to develop into their full, autumnal glory!
