5 button waistcoat to double breasted waistcoat

Somehow my 5 button waistcoat is too big for me. I can wear it as it is, but it just doesn't feel 100% comfortable. At first I thought that I can just move the buttons, but then I realised, that it would turn out strangely asymetrical. I'm now thinking about buying some extra buttons to turn it into a double breasted waistcoat.
    Any thoughts on that?

Could we see a picture of you wearing the waistcoat so we can see if your idea will work?

With my pictures you tend to have to ignore the hat and the ribbons.Kilt.jpg
I see the problem, that you would see even less of the shirt and tie. On the other hand there would be some more "silvery" buttons.

A better solution is to leave the vest buttons as they are, and tailor the back panel of the vest to snug up the fit an inch or two. If too much fabric would need to come out, additional fitting can be done along the side seams, under the arm pits.

Trying to turn the vest into a double breasted, or simply moving the buttons over, would, as you note, raise the height of the vest at the throat. Additionally, the "points" at the bottom front of the vest would look wonky, even if they overlapped perfectly into a single "point", when the front panels are overlapped in such a double-breasted configuration.

What Ken said. Put darts in to the back. These are best left uncut so that when you expand they can be let out again.
