"The Last Highlander" by Sarah Fraser
"The Last Highlander Scotland's Most Notorious Clan Chief, Rebel & Double Agent"
by Sarah Fraser
Harper Press, 2012
"The last nobleman to be executed for treason, Lovat was one of Scotland's most notorious and romantic figures, and this swashbuckling account of his life creates and extraordinary portrayal of a nation in revolt." (cover note)
This is the story of Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat, a well educated Highland Nobleman who dedicated the 77 years of his life to the preservation of Clan Fraser and the Highland way of life. Torn between an emerging "Modern" world and the death of the medieval remnants of the "Clan" system, he played both sides (Jacobite & Hanover), though in his heart, he yearned for an independent Scotland. In the end, he was executed; beheaded for treason (or was it for his convictions).
Sarah Fraser has done an excellent job in researching this well written book and has created a narrative that is fast paced and exciting. This is NOT a boring, historical read; it's an honest, balanced look at the conflict within a man caught up in events beyond his control. Simon Fraser was an, active, colorful character who had his hands in local and nation politics as well as the day to day running of his estates. The author doesn't portray him as an elusive hero but rather, shows the flaws in his charter as well as the depth of his convictions.
My interest in learning more about my ancestors and my heritage, particularly the history and lore of Clan Fraser led me to this book. I found it an enjoyable read, even though it's honest, accurate portrayal of Simons' behavior makes it a bit uncomfortable at times. Even if you are not associated with the Fraser Clan, you will find this an interesting point of view regarding the Jacobite uprisings. All the important players of the uprising are characters in this book and all the underlying attitudes on both sides are explored without prejudice.

One of the interesting details that Sarah describs here and there in the book is how Simon and his clansmen dressed, wearing plaids and wrapping their tartans about them. One of the persons of note in the book is Simons' friend and relative, Major James Fraser of Castle Leathers, who was said to always be clothed in plaid from head to foot, pictured below so dressed.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief
wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. "The Last Highlander" Sara Fraser
