Velcro or Buckles?
Just wondering. What is the general opinion of a kilt with a velcro closure as opposed to a kilt with leather straps? Which do you have? If they have belt/strap closures does/do the kilt(s) have 2 or 3 straps?

Buckles. Two.
It would be hard to suggest that velcro was, er... traditional? ...historical?

A number of my kilts have 3 buckles. I have ordered a couple of kilts with only 2 and have had the 3rd removed from 2 kilts. I have 3 kilts with Velcro closing, and really quite like this closing system for speed of entry and exit.
Cheers...

The reason I ask is that in my browsing I came across a few manufacturers who make their kilts with Velcro closures. I thought that kind of odd so I figured why not go to the experts.

I would say without exception that Velcro is used on Sport type kilts, not dress kilts, however, since a dress kilt's upper buckles are normally hidden by either a belt or a waistcoat, then why not. (I can see Jock Scott's eyes rolling as I write this)....

Of my nine kilts, the four that I wear most frequently (as in several days a week) use velcro closure. They may not be "traditional" but they work well and are comfortable. (I can almost hear the squishy sounds as some members of the Kilt Police are rolling their eyeballs.)
Two of those kilts are mainly for casual wear but two of them get "dressed up" and gain compliments whenever/wherever I wear them. Heh - I even "dress up" a black AmeriKilt for the occasional dinner out. I could even tell a tale of two men with kilts on a cruise from which we recently returned (but that may become a blog post).

I have several USAK Casual kilts with the Velcro closure. While I prefer 2 buckles, the Velcro has an enormous advantage when travelling. Unhook your sporran, place it on the belt to the xray machine, a walk through the metal detector at the airport with ZERO metal on your person - no buckles, no zipper, nada!

For me, no velcro, except for my formal hose flashes. I have kilts with two buckles and with three. I prefer those with three as they hold the kilt on better when you go beltless.

In as much as a kilt belt will cover the buckles, I opt for velcro. I even emailed Roger at USA Kilts and I believe even a 5 yard wool kilt can be made with velcro. In addition to the ease of dressing/undressing, I think velcro can yield a better fit, may be more accommodating to weight gain/loss and give a less bulky waist when a belt is used. I understand some kilts are sewn with an internal buckle closure on the left side with a traditional right sided buckle. Perhaps a hybrid of using velcro on the internal left side closure coupled with a trad buckle closure of the right could work.
