Anybody have shots of HRH Prince Charles tramping about a creekside with his then-young boys at a Scottish creekside? He is wearing a kilt and a jumper (pullover sweater). Definitely a DO. In fact, that film clip is part of the reason for my kilt enthusiasm. I had never seen a kilt worn without the full formal or piper's rig, which is to say that I had never seen the kilt as a practical garment.

That's a good one, P1M, but I think (and my memory could be wrong) the one I remember is a fair bit older. Still, the picture you posted makes my point. DO wear your kilt for hiking and such outdoor activities.
Also, it occurs to me, DO NOT force your son to wear a kilt if he doesn't want to.

DO enjoy your children while wearing a kilt and let them have fun, but NOT while regimental!

I notice "e fhein" is wearing a sgian dhubh (all those police authorities in the UK that can't make their minds up whether it's OK or not, take note); and only one buckle and strap on the right side, which surely gives Court Approval for what Matt wrote on his website. And no kilt belt, which presumably does the same. But, Hamish, what about the hose-shirt thing?

It's been my experience that the additional buckle and strap on the right side are a relatively new thing - the best of my handsewn kilts has only the one strap on either side, and fits VERY well. I think perhaps the extra strap got its start as compensation for sloppy tailoring, and has stuck around since.
