Saffron Colored Kilt

I hope the rabble can chime in here on the saffron colored kilt. Any words of wisdom will be highly appreciated.

I just received my saffron, acrylic kilt from Stillwater. I was thinking it would be more orangish, but it looked a tad on the brown side. After talking to Jerry, he said that this color was about right, and that no two batches of saffron are the same.

Now, I was looking on line and noticed that the RIR pipe band's kilts looked to be on the orange side, and I looked at a ton of pics. Then I discovered the Irish Defense Force band in saffron and their kilts looked more like mine, on the brown side. Could it have been the lighting???

The Saffron color tends to vary quite a bit depending on the source, and as you observed sometimes the lighting. I know I've seen pipe bands where there was a noticable color variation between various members, from a camel or mustard yellow to orangish brown and a few in-between.
To my eye the saffron acrylic from Stillwater is a bit dark, with a more brownish tone than I'm used to. On the other hand, I like the Stillwater kilts saffron "shadow tartan" "heavyweight" wool version better, it has a lighter tone, more mustard than brown.

Fabrics effect color too.

Here's RKilts leather saffron - though don't think Robert is calling it saffron to make it Irish...I call it buckskin.



And the old Utilikilt Workman's in caramel looked very saffron to me.

As was mentioned, the wool saffron looks more orange than the acrylic. BUT- the acrylic still looks like saffron. I've never seen two different saffrons from two different makers that looked the same. Personally, I say you should save for a wool version! I love mine. I actually sold my acrylic because I figured I'd never wear it again after I got the wooly.

Yah, beside the woolies don't pill as much as the Stillwater standards. From now on only wool, unless it's one of RiverKilts leather mungs.

I very much echo these comments. I got an SWK saffron last year preceding a major event and I was short on funds. It served it's purpose and I have worn it a number of times and got value for the money.

Fortunately, John Hart (Keltoi) had a sale around the Feast of St Patrick and I ordered a Saffron in 16 oz Jura. It is somewhere between Canada and California as I write this and I am really looking forward to it as it will be my first wool kilt.

My saffron kilt was made in Pakistan and is claimed to be 80% acrylic, 20% wool.
Quite a vivid orange.
