    Leather Sporran Cantle Update

I had this sporran made by Donnie (Wyvern Leatherworks) probably 15 years ago or so when my life was very different. Many, many things changed not long after receiving it, namely NOT finishing my conversion to Judaism, and I ended up just putting it away in the closet. I've moved a few times since then so it ended up in a box and out of sight/mind. About a year ago I was rearranging some things in the basement and came across it again. Not wanting to wear the star of David, but wanting to wear the sporran, I decided to change out the cantle. I contacted Donnie to see if he could do it and he said, unfortunately, that it couldn't be changed out. So, back in the box it went.

Fast forward to last weekend, I got out my leather tools and decided I was going to make something work myself. I was able to take off the old leather cantle by ripping out the stitching, cutting the lace, and gently pulling the cantle off. A little elbow grease helped remove the old adhesive. I have plenty of leather laying around so I traced and cut out the shape, cased it, and added a simple basketweave and some dye. A little contact cement, restitching and re-lacing, and I now have a lovely beaver pelt sporran that I will love wearing without feeling that I'm misrepresenting myself.

It's been a long, long time since I did any leatherwork, but I'm pleased with how it turned out. I've also decided I might want to work on some other projects too.
