My New Rob Roy Kilt
What's the point of getting a new kilt if you don't brag about it?
This one's hard to describe. It's right between traditional and contemporary. On the traditional side, it's wool, three straps, fringed apron, tartan and hits just above the knee. On the contemporary side, it's really thick, has sewn-down pleats, has an under-apron pocket and the tartan isn't normally associated with kilts (at least I've never seen a Rob Roy kilt before). So, not knowing if this goes in the "Traditional Kilts" area or the "Contemporary Kilts" area, I thought I'd plunk it here and maybe the site administrator will decide later.
Wherever it goes, this one's my favorite.
The photos above were taken Christmas Day. Third in a series of three. Life is good.

Your "Rob Roy" tartan is actually the "Rob Roy MacGregor Modern" - a version of MacGregor.
There's also a "Rob Roy MacGregor Ancient" tartan:
Nice looking kilt!

The tartan bug has really got you, hasn't it!
I don't normally like tartans with a lot of red, but yours looks really nice, who made it?

great looking kilt!
wow! Its very bright but you can pull it off! Looks really fantastic.... The gillies and cream hose work well, black might be too much with such a strong tartan

That's one nice looking kilt. I am not usually too keen on the plain 'chequered' tartans (in spite of their authenticity) but this one works well.
That is a very smart complete outfit too, but with just one item missing: a kilt pin! Otherwise, 10/10!

It was made by Pittsburgh Kilts. It's Jeff's first tartan, and really outdid himself. He was always reluctant to make a tartan kilt, but he gave it a shot when he saw how simple this particular tartan is.

True, Rob Roy is a type of MacGregor. (I thought it was Old MacGregor, but I could be wrong.) I call it "Rob Roy" because the full name is a mouthful, and because if you mention MacGregor, people who know a little about clan tartans will probably expect something else. In development, we called this The Lumberjack. It's sure warm enough for outdoor labor, but it's too nice a kilt for it. I don't want to tweeze sawdust out of the wool fibers.

I'd meant to wear the kilt pin, but forgot it. (Christmas, y'know; rush, rush, rush.) As far as authenticity, is Rob Roy MacGregor a tartan you've seen kilts in before? I never had; I thought this was a pretty original design.

OK, You're forgiven about the kilt pin! I cannot say that I have ever knowingly seen a kilt in that tartan before, but my guess is that if the tartan fabric exists then someone will have had a kilt made-up in it at some time.
Your tartan is indeed Old MacGregor. The oldest specimen of it was collected in 1815/1816 and it was first officially recorded in about 1819. It is believed that the name "Rob Roy" was added during the romantic Victorian period. This is according to The Scottish Tartans Authority, of which I am a member.
