Going to a lodge meeting?

So, I had to get a card for somebody today, and I was at the register of my local Hallmark store, and the lady commented "Oh, your wearing a kilt." Then she asked: "Are you going to a lodge meeting?" Hmmm...is there a secret X-Marks lodge that I'm not aware of, and I'm missing the meetings?

But, on a serious note, I've had my Kilt for almost 2 full weeks now. I wore it on a 10 hour drive up to NC and 10 hour drive back to FL. I wore it all but two days while on my "Vacation" in NC (even wore it when we were looking at apartments). I had only a few comments the whole time. Mostly "are you Scottish?"

I even got to wear it into work last week. I generally have to wear a uniform, but we were in just to do some pre set-up, and my boss said it would be ok. I got teased a bit, but it's from co-workers, and was kinda expected.

Overall, my kilt wearing experience has been quite good thus far.

Well within the Masons there is the Scottish Rite but I don't know of the kilt being part of their regalia. As far as I know, it's just a suit or a tux with the apron.

Some lodges are more formal, but the ones I've attended were generally populated by brothers in jeans or overalls, and baseball caps far outnumber tophats. Of course those are not a Scottish Rite Lodges. I can't say what goes on in Scottish Rite Lodges, but I don't believe kilts are required attire.

However there is an official Masonic Tartan, and I sure do want one!

I always thought of making my house a lodge, so maybe we can have a lodge meeting here, but don't come until I get it all cleaned up I'll let you know

There is a group within the Scottish Rite called the Knights of St. Andrew, and some chapters do have Highland attire as their uniform. The Scottish Rite itself has very little to do with Scotland. It actually is French & German in origin, but the Scottish refers to Scottish Jacobite exiles in France who were active masons.

There is another organisation, the Royal Order of Scotland, where you see quite a few kilts.

I've heard that my great-grandfather who was originally from Glasgow Scotland was a mason had a tartan apron in his clan tartan. Do people ever have aprons like that any more?

Some Scottish masonic lodges in Scotland and in other parts of the world (the former British Empire) do have lodge tartans, and usually the trim or border of the apron is a piece of ribbon in that tartan. The tartan is usually one that belonged to the first Master or a prominent member, or a "universal" tartan such as the Stewart Hunting, and sometimes, individual members will personalise their apron with their own tartan.

My father is a Mason and specifically bought his first kilt for lodge meetings. I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to what he's up to in terms of freemasonry....but i know he's gone through the blue lodge ranks, council, preceptory, shrine.....and this summer I beleive he's travelling to Spokane (from eastern Canada) for an assembly.

Not being of Scottish ancestory, when he decided on a tartan, he picked mackenzie out of respect for his lodge mentor.

I do know quite a bit about the Masons and the customs, but since I am NOT one, I won't speak of them. Not quite my place or my right.
