    Travel: Packing a Kilt

I had read that some of you roll up your kilts to pack them into luggage.

I was wondering if your roll them while buckled or you unbuckle them and roll them up from one end.

    Thanks!

    Will:

I've tried the rolling method a number of times, but haven't been satisfied with it. If you have a carry-on sized suitcase, you can generally do the following:

-Pack the rest of your suitcase first
-Lay your kilt out flat [buckled or unbuckled] on top of the rest of the clothes
-Fold the top down towards the bottom so that the fold comes within the stitched-down portion of the pleats
-Gently tuck any extra bits in place so they don't get caught in the zipper

Reading these instructions, I realize that they aren't so clear. I tried, I guess.

Most kiltmakers can supply a kilt carrier. This is the one I have from McCalman Kilts:-

It is not cheap, but it is well worth it to keep your kilt in good condition while travelling.

Thanks for the information. I looked at their site. The picture rather small, so I can't tell tell what it looks like. But I will search for other images.

I agree with you Rob. I have a couple of the Kilt Rolls from "TFCK". They are great if you are travelling with just one or two kilts, since each roll holds only one kilt. In my case (!), when I travel (which is infrequently), I usually take four or five kilts with me, so I find that rolling the kilts, slipping each one into the leg of an old pair of tights/pantyhose and laying those rolled kilts in the bottom of a suitcase works best.

On arrival at the destination, I simply unroll the kilts and hang them as I would at home, just as quickly as possible. Within an hour or two, you would not know they had been packed in a suitcase in the cargo hold of an aircraft for hours!
