    Just a rant

    Hi all

I feel like I need to rant about something on Wednesday I went with my class to the Special Oylmpics in Guelph I wore my kilt and I was really excited to see that many of the people that were there gave me tons of compliments and one person actually said to me that it was nice to see someone wear a kilt casually, than this one woman walks up to me and asks if I'm regimental and I said no considering that I work with children the risk was too high for a liability being a male wearing a kilt working with children(you get the point)
This women ends up telling me how disgusted she was at me (in the worst possible scottish accent imaginable) for not wearing her traditional garb properly so I looked at her and made a decision to smile nod and walk away I sure could 've said something witty but the only thing that went through my head was a lyric from the band Spirit of the West the song is the OLD SOD and the lyric goes like this None more Scot than the Scots aboard anyways I'm done talk to you all later.

You did the right thing. Obviously she has a very narrow view of her world and you don't fit in with her ideals. A well thought out debate would not have satisfied her, she already made her mind up and you were not going to change it either way.

You should be commended for your approach as you are setting an example to each person, child and adult, who witnessed the proper handling of a potentially confrontational situation.

It is a shame though that one idiot can ruin a day of compliments and confidence when wearing the kilt casually.

    Take care Bro,

If she couldn't understand the reason for not going Regimental, then she is the one with the problem. She was obviously unstable, so I think you did the right thing with the smile and nod.. That way you are not feeding the flames...

I may be wrong here, but the only people in kilts required to go regimental, are, wait for it.... Regimentals (and I think only then on specific occasions)!!

There is no rule for a civilian to forego undergarments. There is a thread over at ViperPiper's Bagpipe pages concerning this very topic.

    http://www.viperpiper.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2459

There is another thread at Bob Dunsire's bagpipe forums

    http://www.bobdunsire.com/CGI-BIN/ul...=005799#000000

From what I can gather, this woman is in the smallest of minorities. From the opinions I have read, most people at Highland Games and other functions would prefer men do not go regimental...

You did well to hold your tongue... Guid on you lad.....

I agree that you did the right thing. It reminds me of an old joke. Two men meet and start talking. They discover they are both Christians and greet each other with "Praise the Lord, Brother." Then one asks if the other is a Baptist, and when they discover they are both Baptists, they say "Praise the Lord, Brother." But are you a Convention Baptist? Yes. Praise the Lord, Brother. Do you follow the findings of the fourth council of 1357? Yes. Praise the Lord, Brother. But do you accept the third protocol adopted by the fourth council? Yes. Praise the Lord, Brother. This goes on and on until they find some small area of theological dispute, at which they respond "Die you heretic!"

Some people just can't take yes for an answer.

    NOT regimental in the band

Greetings MacHummel! Indeed you responded properly to this poor maladjusted individual. Though unofficially mandated, I do require that ALL members of our band dress "modestly," if you catch my meaning, for we feature as many women in our band as we do men, and youngsters as well. I believe it to be the best policy to avoid any and all embarrassing situations by compromising this one minor aspect of traditional kilt-wearing in the interest of our band. It seems that you are wise and thoughtful to take in consideration others when wearing the kilt, for whether we like it or not, this garment can make it tricky at times to maintain modesty. And does it strike anyone else as simply downright rude to ask such a question? I find this to be no less offensive as asking a female stranger if she is wearing panties. But maybe that's just me.

And everyone, I apologize, but please understand that I will talk about my band a great deal, seeing as I spend more time with my them than I do my own family. Hopefully you will all come to tolerate it. ;)

hpdpipemajor: You may talk about your band as much as you like! I, for one, love to hear about such things.
