Anybody going to Grandfather Mountain this year?

Is anyone going to Grandfather Mountain this year? This is going to be my first time at GMHG and I'm looking for some information. I have a primitive campsite on the games grounds and am wondering what is and isn't allowed. If I've been informed correctly GMHG is in a dry county (i.e. no alcohol), but, I can't imagine a games without a wee dram.

Anyway, just looking for bits of info on what to do, what not to do, etc...

    We'll be there.
I just hope we get past these everyday thunderstorms we
have had for the last couple of weeks.

You can have your dram, you just have to "Brown Bag" it.
This is from GMHG web site:
    1. Avery County is a dry county. All containers of alcohol must be kept out of sight in bags or boxes and off the tables at MacRae Meadows. The tent keeper must enforce this policy or GMHG Security will handle the situation. [Any violations reported to GMHG SECURITY will be turned over to the Avery County Sheriff's Department]
I have taken whisky and beer to the games for several years.
You just have to use a coozy for beer and keep you
    whisky bottle out of sight.

I sometimes carry my flask attached to my belt and it has been fine.
On the other hand if you were to overdo it and become too rowdy or
knee walking drunk then security would deal with you.

I would also suggest you bring plenty of warm and rain proof clothing.
It can be quite cool and we can get a good deal for rain.
Temps can go from upper 80's during the day to upper 40's at night.

Are you on the 11 pm or 1 am curfew side?

That sounds just fine! It sounds like they more or less have an "out-of-sight-out-of-mind" policy toward adult beverages. And, since I'm on the 1pm curfew side it should be a rather nice party at least until 1pm. I imagine the curfew is reasonably enforced for noise but I can't imagine too many people actually sleeping. Besides, my son is coming with me I can't get too rowdy!

So, ya'll come by my tent for an adult beverage!

    Celticman,

You will have a blast at Grandfather. Sounds like you're going to be on McRowdy. You are right about the alcohol. But around the campsite its pretty much ignored. At least it was when I was there last (2000). I hope to go back soon. I was planning on going this year, but some thing came up and had to back out. The first year, I went by myself and didn't know anyone. I made friends and had a great time. If you don't mind cold showers, they are available all the time. And in the heat of the day, it can be a nice thing.
If you need some help getting around, look for a guy named Chuck. He's about 6'5" with short blonde hair and a goatee. He'll be there Wednesday night or Thursday morning. His group usually camps near the big fire ring, you can't miss it. And for a good veiw for MacRae Meadows, follow the trail to the top of McRowdy. Just do it sober.
    Wish I was there.

Heathbar is right about the great view.
The late curfew side is called Camp McRowdy if you missed it.
It used to be no curfew on that side.
But the last 2 years they have started the 1 am curfew.
On Sat. night they give you a little more leeway.
I will be on the 11 pm side. We like to go over to McRowdy and have fun then
head back to sleelp on the 11pm curfew side.
On Sat Night they have a Ceilidh on the 11 pm side then march over
to Camp McRowdy and it goes on for quite a while their.
It usually starts about 9. Around 11 we march.
It is worth coming over to see the festivities.

It sure is good to know all of these things beforehand! I sure would hate to miss any of the good parties! :-D It's a 1740 mile round trip and I don't want to drive back home on Monday thinking I missed something!
