Buzz Kidder Canvas Kilts...

Anyone own one of Buzz Kidder's canvas kilts, and want to leave an reivew of it?

I have one. It's not bad, but it's not my favorite kilt. The canvas is very stiff, even after numerous washings. I also find the pleats tend to curl up alot and can be very frustrating.

I have one that I bought used and my feelings are pretty much the same. Its not that I don't like it, I do, but it does curl and wrinkles badly if you spend much time sitting.

Now, that said, it is a good knock around kilt and stands up great to hiking and being in the woods.

Buzz Kidder had a booth at the Flagstaff, AZ Highland games last weekend. They guys there seemed like they were under duress and mostly sat back with their kilt supply in big plastic bins. They did have a manaquin set up with a sample kilt. That sample kilt had pleats curled like the bottom of the letter J. Thought they'd have at least ironed if for display.

So, my guess is if they're gonna display kilts with curled pleats at a booth that's probably what you're gonna get.

To be clear, I don't own a BK kilt.

They did seem to sell a lot of tshirts and belts though. Even then their booth had nowhere near the action of the Utilikilts booth or the Kathy's Kilts booth (traditional hand sewn), both were constantly busy.

Todd, I owned one for about two weeks... and sold it to a "newbie". 'Nuff said.

For the money, I would recommend (from experience) that you hit-up Jeff over at PittsburghKilts. IF you need speed, AmeriKilts has a load of new materials available, and they're not bad. If Mike Butler had the time to spend here that other kilt makers have, they would be getting MUCH more thread-time.

You already know my tell-tale signs for a quality-made kilt... and that's the absence of "wandering" pleats, and puckering apron corners. The puckering apron is the only problem that I have with UtiliKilts (since the pleats are too large to wander). AmeriKilts work well, but aren't custom-made like PK's. AmeriKilts also don't look too much like the tartan casuals that you're used to. The pleats are sewn-down and very wide. They're comfortable... just not overly "Celtic". Apparently, the "Boulder Kilts" from SportKilt aren't "all that". Bear could make you a solid that would do well too... but you'll need to ask him about availability right now.

Right now, in my opinion, there's no solid kiltmaker out there that has the quality, the "Celtic" appearance (available), the options and the price that Jeff at Pittsburgh Kilts has. Go by the tell-tale signs and browse. The camoflauge kilt that he made for me (and was seen at Adams County) fits the bill. Kiltmakers should get better with experience... and Jeff's there now.
