    University Tartans

Just checked my alma mater, Oregon State University, and darned if they haven't just had a tartan design contest for the university and picked a winner.

The sad news is they're holding off on how to get some until homecoming in late October.

A related article says this is a growing thing with universities...to adopt an official university tartan.

The UC Riverside tartan has a really cool look when you walk too. Predominantly it shows the blue on the apron, gold on the back, with peeks of bright blue in the pleats as they swish.

(BTW I'm back, after a long hiatus)

    University Tartans

My alma mater also has a tartan. I thought I read somewhere that it is registered with the Irish authority, but I can't find that information right now. They also have a pipe band now, but it was started AFTER I graduated. (Major bummer, that).

Tartan info I was able to find: A special Notre Dame plaid was first conceived in 1966 by Director of Bands, Robert O'Brien. In 1969 drawings were presented to Frank Amussen who completed the final sketches. One design was basically green with another design basically blue. Additional colors were added to symbolize important aspects ofNotre Dame.

The design was submitted to the Court of the Lord Lyon, in Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 11, 1970. There it was examined by the Tartan Advisory Committee which confirmed that the Notre Dame plaid did not appear to be associated with any clan or name in Scotland.

The blue design was adopted by the University as the official plaid and has been trademarked and copyrighted. The colors in the plaid symbolize the following:

    GREEN- the Fighting Irish
BLUE and GOLD - the colors of the University of Notre Dame du Lac
RED - the Church and the Holy Cross Fathers
    BLACK- delineates the design

I would LOVE to get a kilt with the Irish Guard tartan, but as I was never a member of the guard I'll never be able to get one unless I pry it away from a former guard member. One of my suitemates one year was in the guard... He was a bit taller than me, too. As only a six-footer I'd never have been able to get into the guard.

It's registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority.

ND not only has a pipe band, but also a Hurling club as well. Why wasn't this stuff around in 1987 when I got there?
