Tartan for Greeks

Dear friends

After our "kirkin" several Greek members of our parish are desirous of a tartan which they could wear.

I told them I would enquire with the experts. Perhaps there were Highland regiments which had been in Greece, or had some relationship with Greece?

Help?

They are sincere, and loved the service, the pipes, and the tartans they saw.

Just off the top of my head here, but those of Greek heritage could wear the Gordon Tartan, in honour of George Gordon, Lord Byron, who died in Greece in 1823(?) whilst fighting the Turks for Greek Independence.

The St. Andrew's tartan (Earl of St. Andrews) might be appropriate as well, since St. Andrew is one of the patron saints of Greece.

I'll see what else I can come up with, Father!

That's a puzzler. Googled this up. Young man went with the St. Andrew's tartan. Has a swatch of it too.

The St. Andrew tartan is a good choice since St. Andrew preached and was martyred in Greece.

I think between the St. Andrew's and the Gordon (died fighting for Greek independence? I'm surprised he's not a Greek saint!), they will be very happy!

It warms the heart just thinking about all those Greek Orthodox boys getting their kilts.

As long as they have a Greek tartan, it's a guaranteed winner.

The St. Andrew's is indeed the same color as the Greek flag, and will have that in it's favor.

I am of Greek decent and have always wondered if there was a tartan, and funny but when I was in Scotland last year I almost bought the St Andrew's tartan, and at my wedding this year my brother in law Jamie didn't have a kilt too wear so he borrowed is neighbours who plays in the OPP(Ontario Provincial Police) pipe band and the tartan they wear is the St. Andrew's.
What a strange twist of fate and the next time I got out to do the Zorba I make sure to wear a St Andrew's tartan also I'm a huge fan of the Holyrood tartan.

I must confess that when I heard that there was a "Holyrood" tartan, being such a fan of "The Dream of the Rood", it seems incredibly appropriate for an Orthodox priest to wear a tartan called "Holy Cross."
