Sporran placement on the hips

Does anyone ever pull their working sporran over to the side of their hip when they're walking around?

I've been walking around with my Freelander for two days now, and I find the heavy bounce to be annoying - not to mention the 6" - 8" strings with beads on the end, whipping all over the place as I walk! They look great standing still, but they start flying every which way as soon as I start walking!

For day to day wear I always use one of Scotweb's 'side sporrans': much more convenient for day to day living, in and out of car-even sitting here at the machine.

Too in the days when I did a lot of hillwalking/backpacking, I'd always end up with my sporran round the side for the simple fact of comfort.

The problem being that what looks very smart for parade, formal wear, is not of necessity practical.

Too some of the pictures posted show the sporran at a level where it must impede walking, an would certainly be dangerous/painful if say running for a bus with anything in it.

Old pictures will often show the sporran either right up to the belt or round the side: just as military photographs will show how often the sporran is not being worn.

Oddly enough whilst I've never had a comment about my side sporran-leave off the skean dhu and someone is bound to say something.

The whole point is that the kilt is a practical garment, and our ancestors wore it as such; and we must be careful not to get lead astray for the Victorian desire for uniformity and rules.

There have been several folks hear talk about wearing the sporran on the hip while going thru daily business so I don't think it would be unsightly, although I might would consider using a more simple sporran in this application. By the way, I commend you on the way you are incroporating the kilt into contemporary fashion. This is yet more evidence of how practical the kilt is a practical garment even today.

I do it all the time. Make sure your sporrans are on leather straps - not chains, and made so they can swivel around on the strap.

I put mine to the side when working, running etc. sometimes even round to the back!

I've moved it to the hip occasionally to get it out of the way for one reason or another, but I don't wear it that way. But I agree that is a casual, everyday situation, wear it however you like.

I personally like having my sporran on the front. I find it more convenient when I'm looking for my lighter.

I generally wear my sporran rather high, about 2 fingers below the belt, and haven't much of a problem while walking. Sitting is another matter. I wear my sporran on a strap that is essentially a very narrow belt with the buckle worn in back. I use the standard slip-through leather bit with a metal loop on both ends used for chains. I slip the belt through both metal loops. I can then slide the sporan around to either side without moving the strap. I find, though, that I almost always slide it to the left. I automatically shift it to the side whenever I'm sitting down in a chair or on a car seat.
