    Hunting McLeod colors?

Can anyone tell me what colors are in the SWK Hunting McLeod tartan? I can easily make out the yellow and red stripes, and I can tell that there are other colors in the darker panels, but I can't tell what they are; even the swatches I find on line are too dark to tell for sure.

Looks like the red and yellow are the two stripes with blue/green/and black (possibly black watch) as the background.

I am sure Stillwater has the same set up.

That swatch is a lot lighter than the ones I found before! You're right, it does look like blue, green and black.

If I am not mistaken, it is very similar to the MacKenzie tartan except that the white stripe has been replaced with a yellow one. I remember hearing something about this before, but can't remember which one came first. I bet Matt, Todd, or Barb has more on this......

    MacLeod of Harris...

    Colin,

You were "spot on" wi' your comparion with the Mackenzie tartan:

The "McLeod" tartan (also known as McLeod of Harris) was a Black Watch variation (yellow and red over-stripes) adopted by Maj-Gen. John (Mackenzie), Lord Macleod upon raising the 73rd McLeod Highlanders in 1777 (renumbered 71st in 1786). The tartan was originally called Mackenzie, not to be confused with the Mackenzie tartan worn by the successor Highland Light Infantry, although the yellow stripes may have originally been the buff of the early Mackenzie pattern, which changed to white ca. 1800.
