    My fist kilted outing

I thought I would share my first kilted experience with the other members of this board. This past week my church had a silly gift exchange. I thought that it would be as good an occasion as any to ware my kilt into public for the first time. Let me explain that I attend a VERY progressive church that is based on acceptance, so I figured my kilt wearing would not be poorly received. I wore my Utilikilt original in olive green because it looked dressier than my Survivor and I haven’t ordered a Farquharson traditional yet. The first person I encountered was our pastor (who happens to be a woman) and at first she didn’t even notice what I was wearing and when she did she complimented me on my kilt and said, “ If a man can’t ware a kit here and be excepted…” The next person to notice had a decidedly different opinion about my kilt wearing. One of the many lesbians that attend our church confronted me and said in a very hostile aggressive and sarcastic manner “ an interest out fit that your are wearing” I replied, “you think so?” And I left it at that. Soon after another group of women called me over to there table and demanded to know what I was doing after church. When I told them nothing they demanded to know why I was wearing a kilt. They must have thought that I was attending some sort of Scottish function afterwards. It seems that “because I wanted to” was not an expectable answer but I left it at that. As for the traditional couples and gay men I received nothing but compliments and praise and I even got into interesting conservation about tartans and family history. So all in all the experience was as I expected and was a good first outing. I will be wearing my kilt more and more and yes even to church despite some nasty comments. They can just get over it.

Well done. It's good to have kilts accepted in the church.

First encounters while kiltwearing are always memorable. This is a great one.

It gets easier over time. You just have to decide to do it.

As Blu said, it does get easier over time. Confidence and determination it what it takes, and you have already made big strides in that area on just your first outing. Kudos to you for handling the situation well on those few comments that were somewhat negative.

I find it interesting that one of the negative reactions was from a pair of lesbians.

    A similar experiences to mine

I decided to do a search on the comfortable shoe crowd and discovered that this open hostility toward kilted men is not an isolated occurrence. Here is a quote from Riverkilt describing a similar experience. I wonder what’s going on?

    (a quote from Riverkilt)
“I have noticed that SOME lesbian women seem put out that I am kilted, like I'm stealing something from them...even though they don't wear skirts or dresses themselves. Their comments and questions tend to be nasty and aggressive...("How do you sit down to take a dump in that?")”
