    Memorial Service for killed EMT

I don't know if any of you heard the news story about an off-duty EMT who was struck by a car while aiding the victim of a spin-out accident in Albany, near Berkeley, California.

Scott Lofgren was a friend of mine and a fellow Burning Man attendee. He was a campmate at our "Thermal Shock" camp at Burning Man.

His memorial service was held this past Saturday, and I'm very glad I was able to attend and participate.

I related that Scott typically worked the night shift and had been up all night running calls. In the morning he came into camp exhausted and crashed out on a cot.

We got a call that there was a kid having a seizure in a nearby camp. We loaded into vehicles. Scott, on maybe 3 hours of sleep, dragged himself up, grabbed his gear, and was first-in on the call. In a couple of minutes he had brought the kid out of the seizure and into full consciousness.

I thanked Scott on behalf of that kid and all the other people he's rescued over the years who couldn't be at the service to thank him themselves.

Deep condolences to family & friends.

I think I've lost count of how many EMTs & policemen who have been killed this way.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. I first heard about this on the EMTlife forum.

That is SO fckn sad....will send up some smoke for him.

Not sure how the newspaper can say the driver had been drinking but was not under the influence...the least bit of improved reaction time could have helped.

Good they had a piper for the memorial. Know this hits the fire service hard, and the spouses of firefighters...

Know plans must be underway for a tribute at Burning Man this year too...

Any death is a loss for us all.

I am grateful that he devoted his life to helping others.

I'm deeply sorry to hear of the death of your friend, who spent his professional life saving others.

And they say that there are no heroes. A hero does not always die a heroic death, by Hollywood standards, but trying to save another.

God bless him. I'm sorry I'm so far away.

My heart goes out to the victim and his family. I know all to well the dangers my brothers and sisters still in public safety face every day. They are in my prayers.

Anytime I hear of someone who died while helping others, especially one who helped on a daily basis, I cannot help but feel that true humanity has lost something that cannot be replaced. No one deserves our gratitude for doing their job as much as these selfless men and women. I pray that Goddess bless them and keep them safe.

    A tragic, needless death.
