    Plaid for ladies?

Kim & I went to a Burns dinner last night and I noticed that a lot of ladies had various plaids worn in several different ways. I would like to get her something but I never figured out what, even after asking.
One wore a length of tartan bandolier style, others looked more shawl like.
Some matched husbands tartan, some didn't. Some were clearly not tartan, but rather fashion plaids.
So what is there for the ladies accessories? What tartan & how should they be worn?
    Thanks
    David

The sash can be worn bandolier style or like a fly plaid.
Always over the right shoulder (left shoulder for chiefs and dancers).

A large shawl can be worn...err...like a shawl I guess (less formal  )

I'm not an expert, but I also ordered a tartan shawl for my gal, so I tried to find the same information you're looking for.

Source: "So you're going to wear the kilt!" "And the ladies" pages 41-44.
(the shawl is not mentioned there, so I presume it's "casual or fashion")

    sash protocol

A very good article explaining the "skinny" on sashes can be found on the Tartans Authority web site:

Thanks guys, I had seen both of those.

Do I order my tartan? Something Irish to honor her family?

I think it would be appropriate either way. Either match your tartan, or choose a tartan appropriate to her family. And of course, one question is whether you WANT to match or not.

My wife wears the Louisiana tartan, in honour of her family's heritage. Before that she wore the Nova Scotia tartan, since the Melancons were part of the exodus of Acadians from there in 1755. Both tartans are great conversation starters! ;)

    Cheers,

    Todd
