I finally did it...
OK, as most know I have had cream hose to wear with my kilts and have been reticent to get any, against the recommendations of even Hamish (sacrilege, I know)! Anyway, while visiting Dundein Scottish this past week, I decided that I needed to get at least one pair and see how I liked the look. Below is the debut of me in a new look. I do find that the cream hose do seem more casual, and they paired up nicely with my brown sporran and belt. My question is what shirts go well with cream hose, just a light colored ones, or any color? As always, any advise appreciated.

Tie dye goes well with cream hose.

I have cream and oatmeal hose. When I wear a tartan I pick a shirt that color coordinates with a color in the kilt. Then I either wear flashes that are the same tartan as the kilt, or solid color flashes that cordinate either with the shirt or a color in the tartan. To me, cream or oatmeal colored hose are neutral, and give you a base from which to work. Don't know if Hamish would agree with this.

Rob, what you are wearing there looks good to me! Yes that IS a sincere Hamish statement!! However, to my eyes you are presenting a slightly semi-formal look rather than a casual one although, of course, we all have differing ideas as to what 'casual' really is. I still prefer oatmeal, beige or stone coloured hose for dressing casually UNLESS....... 'casual' involves boots with folded down hose; in which case almost any toning hose will do. Hose worn pulled up, and with flashes, is bound to present a more formal look. I certainly like that you have colour-matched your shirt and hose here (I should like to see the sporran worn a little higher however - yours looks as if it would be somewhat uncomfortable worn down there!).
Darrell has it right: I agree entirely with what he says, and I have always held that oatmeal coloured hose works well with ANY tartan for casual or semi-formal wear. For me, I still have reservations about cream hose, but I do wear them, as I said, folded down with boots in summer - very seldom though, pulled up - unless I am 'Prince Charlied' or 'GT Doubleted'.
If nothing else, cream hose is vastly preferable to white - which should be worn only by pipers when their uniform calls for it!!!

Ok, doing the happy dance now! I got validation from Ham about my ensemble!
And Ham, I am still going for a slightly more formal look as this is for the office. On the weekends or when going out other than to the office, I will usually have the hose rolled/pushed down, unless it is cold. And yes, the sporran had slipped down some while I was getting the kids ready for school. This was a quickly snapped pic as I went out the door.
But, aaarrrgghhh, I thought cream and oatmeal were 2 words for the same color hose! Now I find out I should really have gone for oatmeal (although there weren't no such animal at Dunedin Scottish)! Oh well, having resisted light colored hose until now, I am pleased with the look. Have to go get some oatmeal ones now, and some stone colored I guess.
Cheers!

I'm glad Ham brought up the stone colored hose. I am going to purchase a pair. I have a Utilikilt Mocker in heather grey on the way, and I think stone colored hose would be a good choice to wear with this kilt when I want to give a nod to tradition, but wear a contemporary kilt.
Thinking about that combination, it gives you a wide choice of shirts, prints, solids, plaids of almost any color. Then if you want to dress it up a bit more, you can add some flashes that match a color in the shirt. This gives you a somewhat "business casual" combination that I would not hesitate to wear anywhere except a formal event.
Ham, thank you for your excellent albumn, it has given me many ideas on how to "look good" wearing a kilt.

Darrell,
I have that same kilt and that would look sharp. Let me know if you find a good source for stone colored hose, and I will look and let you know if I find some.

Robert at Rkilts make a great braided leather sporran strap, I have one of these, it is a very high quality item. I purchased mine based on KCW's endorsement.
If you are looking for a good leather sporran belt, this is an answer.
