    A squirrel with your kilt?

Here is Elvis, one of our pets, checking out a kilt. He is an 8-year-old glaucomys volans (Southern Flying Squirrel)

He can easily glide over 100 feet, and he can scramble up your kilt or down your shirt before you realize what's going on. He is a fast little fellow. They were popular pets with school children in colonial New England during the 1700's.

I have always loved flying squirrels, ever since I heard about them in grade school. It would be fun to have one as a pet, though my wife would not want it, but my dog and cat may!

    Great shot! Beautiful animal!

I thought that they were nocturnal, the ones we have up here in the northwest only come out at night.

BTW, I am constantly trapping squirrels in my attic. Never thought of turning them into a sporran. Hmmmmmmm...

Okay...here's where you guys find out just how old I really am...

....squirrels in kilts, eh? I remember a song and puppet piece that they used to use on Captain Kangaroo:

    Angus McTavish McTarvish Dundee

There was a red squirrel lived up in a tree,
Name of Andrew McFergus McTavish Dundee.
Frisking high in the branches, oh, merry was he,
    Was Andrew McFergus McTavish Dundee.

He nibbled on nuts he had stored, don't you see,
    This Andrew McFergus McTavish Dundee,
And he bombed all the picnickers under his tree,
    Did Andrew McFergus McTavish Dundee.

Now if I were not myself, I'd much like to be
    Like Andrew McFergus Mctavish Dundee.
I'd not pay the rent, my meals would be free,
I would smile at you from the top of a tree,
    Beside Andrew McFergus Mctavish Dundee!"

This was accompanied by a paper puppet bit featuring...wait for it....a squirrel in a kilt!

And I see that this was a tune done by the Limeliters...featuring Bob Gibson (big man in Chicago folk music circles).

And if you remember this, yer too damn old.

And thanks, Captain K, for being there for us kids...wish that you were still on TV for the current bunch!

    Best

    AA

...and what was that old movie that I saw on late at night recently that had a performing squirell in a kilt? ...The Great Rupert!
