Comic Underwear!

I noticed in another thread it was suggested that in case of accidental exposure during a parade, 'funny' underwear should be worn.

Whilst there could be a case for such wear in private: there is non at all for a public occasion, where a fickle wind or whatever could expose such a garment to the general public.

Better, far better to wear plain underwear such as black briefs/boxer shorts.

I say this because there is enough nonsense, silly jokes etc about what is worn under the kilt as it is: nonsense that does not enhance kilt wearing for us, and deters potential kilt wearers.

So do not pander to the idea of the moment however attractive it might seem.

Rather respect yourself, the kilt, and other kilt wearers.

Think we're a tad looser here in the Colonies. The mention I saw was for wearing boxers with shamrocks on them for the St. Paddy's day parade...seems a fitting thing in case of wind.

I choose to wear tartan print boxer shorts when I feel I must wear anything at all, figure the wind would answer the question in a most Scottish way.

But...I do have a pair of black satin boxers with bright red hearts on them from an old joke Valentine's Day gift. Always thought they might be appropriate for courting....or a game of kilted strip poker....

Please don't take this as an attack, I make this statement in the spirit of open debate.

Some of us don't take things as seriously as others do. We're not here to "enhance kilt wearing" for others; that's something they have to do for themselves.

As casual wearers of the kilt (as many of us are), we've already established that we are indivdualists, we do not follow the dictates of society's sense of style; therefore, we often also discard the dictates of tradition in favor of our own whims. That's our perogitive; the kilt is not a uniform.

"The kilt is Not a Costume," isn't that one of our unofficial by-lines here at X-Marks? Well, it's true; they're just clothes! If one of the guys wants to make a joking statement with his choice of underwear, I'm going to laugh with the rest. I'm not going to worry about how it affects me; it doesn't. His choices reflect on him and no-one else.

If you're intending on your undergarments beeing seen, feel free to wear something silly as a joke. Hopefully others will understand that it is only a joke, and won't hold anything against the rest of us lads. Unfortunately, it's pretty easy for the trouser society to group us all together and apply too many stereotypes, so that the actions of one kilted fellow may reflect the image of all kilt-wearers. Dang pants-wearers, they're all alike!!

"Comic underwear"? As a full-time kilt wearer of many years standing, I consider ALL underwear to be comic!

But I do see where James is coming from, and he has a very valid point.

I cannot believe someone would object to someone wearing something under the kilt even if it is humorous! If you are worried that your kilt may be lifted by an ill wind blowing and you are modest enough to be embarassed, then by all means wear something under your kilt. If you want it to be funny, so be it. If we all were strictly traditional, then we would not be wearing the casual or the solid colored or anything other than a tank or the great kilt. In the US where we tend to be overly "Politically Correct" and we worry about offending someone in the crowd if the kilt rises to the occasion On windy days I wear either black boxers or tartan boxers, but I do like the idea of Shamrock covered boxers.

OK enough with the rant, how many are going to be kilted on St. Patrick's Day?

I would like to state that I am not wearing the shamrock boxers as a joke or to be funny, I am simply wearing them in case the wind picks up and I have no hands to control the problem. In my ideal world I would have a traditional eight yard kilt for this occasion, however I don't have one yet (hopefully the xmarks tartan will come in and get made in an instant) my fear is to show a parade full of people too much information.

Because of my cancer surgery I always have to wear something under the kilt, but to me it is a bigger insult to those that wear a kilt all the time for me to be walking in a parade where most people will see kilts all day and have them find out that if the wind hits you the wrong way that you will be showing it all to anyone close, kids, grandparents, police. I feel by wearing something light (and in the spirit of St. Patrick's day) that if something bad does happen at least this kilt wearer won't be insulting the eyes of all the people watching the parade. I have the utmost confidence in my USA kilt with my heavy kilt pin and sporran, but I just would rather be safe than sorry. My goal is not to embarrass, myself, my brand new pipe and drum corps, my wife or anyone watching, I will take measures to make sure that the kilt doesn't come up and noone sees the boxers, but I was researching ideas on this board and I thought that was a good one. I also liked the idea of pinning back of kilt with a short string to the bottom of the boxers. These are just ideas, hopefully it will be a very calm day and it won't matter, I just wanted opinions if it wasn't.

If that offends some of the people on the board I deeply apologize, but my concious won't let me go out with the chance of thousands of people seeing something they shouldn't.

I do understand what James is saying and I see his point.

However, I also feel that is one is man enough to wear the kilt, he is man enough not to take himself too seriously, especially the way St. Pat's is celebrated in this country.

Besides, there are too many other things happening in this world to worry about underwear.

I agree with James on the issue of comic underwear. I'm not a traditionalist in the sence that I own a wool, taylored kilt. My kilts are Stillwaters, Buzz Kidders, and Amerikilts. However, one thing that I have gained from my membership here at XMarks is a respect for the kilt and it's rich heritage. I never go regimental, but I always were solid color briefs.

Certainly this is all a personal choice, but when I wear my kilts I want to project an image of being well dressed, an image that projects pride in my appearance, and pride in the kilt. If I have an accidental exposure, then all that will be seen are dark colored briefs.

I even wear my Amerikilts with kilt hose, flashes, and a crest badge on the sporran. The kilt is contemporary, but worn in a way that honors the traditions on which it is based. I think this blend of contemporary and traditional attire compliment each other quite well. Of course this is just my opinion, and the way I prefer to dress, whether the kilt is a traditional style or contemporary.
