And those were my next. I was debating about the American College of Heraldry, however, as they have no "official" standing. They do register Arms, but may not "grant" them. More's the pity, thinks I.

They're the best we have in the US at the moment, though. The New England Historic Genealogical Society's Committee on Heraldry will also register arms. Neither may "grant" arms because there is no heraldic authority, although some heraldic scholars are now stating that "assuming" arms is not "illegal" per se in the US since we do not have a legally recognized authority.

Australia and South Africa are in similar situations, although citizens in all three nations may receive foreign grants of arms with proper documentation.

    Cheers,

    Todd

My understanding is that Australians must go through the College of Arms in the UK.

I know there are people in Canada who have assumed Arms, and apparently it is still not considered illegal. Something to do with copyright laws if memory serves. There was a discussion on the The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada discussion board about it.

There is a move at present to create a heraldic authority in Australia, similar to Canada's, at least from my understanding.

Are you a member of the RHSC then? I am a member of the American Heraldry Society.

    Cheers,

    Todd
