Flashes seem to come in many shapes and sizes, depending upon your kiltmaker or Messrs Lochcarron! I can barely resew buttons, but I have made many pairs of flashes over the years - no two pairs being of the same dimensions, or even style. The latest were made from the off-cuts when I had my "X Marks the Scot" tartan kilt tailored:

I usually try to incorporate a loop in the fabric, but the off-the-peg flashes sold by most Highland Outfitters seldom have them, so I guess loops are not that important. In the case of these "X Marks..." ones, there was insufficient suitable material available for the loops.
If I can make these, anyone can - believe me!
