    Shirts In or Out

Ok, I'm still pretty new to the kilt thing, so. . .

Is there any convention for tucking in your shirt?

I know there are thought on sporrans, hose, and the like. However, I haven't come across anything about tucking the shirt in or not. I'm assuming it's up to the wearer, but what are your thought?

In. It definately looks neater, and it doesnt cover up your belt and sporran.

I do wear sweatshirts untucked though, but T-shirts and dress shirts I always tuck.

I think personally that the shirt should always be tucked in (besides you then show off your kilt belt and sporran).

    Cheers

To my eye leaving the shirt out looks sloppy, but then, with a very few exceptions, I've always thought that, even before I started wearing kilts.

yeah, I usually tuck it in, but I was wearing a football jersey that just looked odd tucked in (especially since it tucks in so much higher with a kilt). the sporran is completely visible, but the belt is indeed covered.

Well, having shirt-tails under the wool keeps the wool from directly contacting your sensitive bits.

If you're wearing a football jersey or something, I'd recommend a long T-shirt or something underneath it - tucked in.

I think it depends on the rise of a kilt (contemporary "hip-hugger" or traditional high waist), and also the kind of shirt. T-shirts, soccer, rugby, football jerseys with a low-waist I think would look odd tucked in (well, depending on the length of the t-shirt, but the others). A dress shirt (unless layered over another shirt) generally always looks a little off unless tucked in, especially with a kilt, because if it's cut long enough, it could start to cover up the pleating, which (to my eye) detracts from the style and impact of the kilt.

    Just my few cents.

Yep, I tuck in dress shirts as it looks cleaner and the whole point of a dress shirt is to look "dressy". However, if I am around the house, walking, hiking, camping or working in a kilt I untuck a normal t-shirt, I think it looks better and I can move around more without the shirt holding me down, in the end it just comes untucked any way...if i wear an undershirt, i tuck that in and I leave the top shirt out
